Pedro Sánchez ‘eyes top Nato job’ in case he loses Spanish election
The Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, is said to be formulating a plan B if he is defeated in national elections in a few weeks: to become the next head of Nato.
Sánchez called a snap vote for July 23, which prompted El Mundo and other media outlets to suggest the date was chosen to give him time to submit his candidacy for the Nato job if he lost.
Nato members would like to settle the question of who will succeed Jens Stoltenberg as secretary-general before a summit in Lithuania in mid-July. However, there may not be time to resolve the issue before then because the alliance is struggling to find a new leader. Stoltenberg is due to step down in October.
Several European countries are understood to see Mette Frederiksen, 45, the prime minister of Denmark, as the strongest contender to replace Stoltenberg. Ben Wallace, 53, the British defence secretary, and Kaja Kallas, 45, the prime minister of Estonia, are among others frequently mentioned as possible candidates.
Sánchez has denied rumours that he is interested — only fuelling speculation that he plans to apply. He brought forward the national election from December this year after his Socialist party suffered heavy defeats in regional and municipal elections.
