The French writer on her singular memoir being longlisted for the Man Booker international prize and why #MeToo has her backing

Annie Ernaux, 78, is one of France’s most respected writers, and has won multiple awards for her books, including the 2017 Marguerite Yourcenar prize for her entire body of work. She was largely unknown in the UK until her memoir, Les Années, was published in English (The Years, translated by Alison L Strayer) and made it on to the longlist for this year’s Man Booker international prize (the shortlist will be announced on Tuesday). The book was a bestseller in France and, according to writer John Banville, “blends memories, dreams, facts and meditations into a unique evocation of the times in which we lived, and live”.
You have written the book using “one” and “we” and occasionally “she” or “they”, but never “I”, which is unusual even for an impersonal autobiography…
When I think of my life, I see my story since childhood until today, but I cannot separate it from the world in which I lived; my story is mixed with that of my generation and the events that happened to us. In the autobiographical tradition we speak about ourselves and the events are the background. I have reversed this. This is the story of events and progress and everything that has changed in 60 years of an individual existence but transmitted through the “we” and “them”. The events in my book belong to everyone, to history, to sociology.
The Years is an account of events and changes over more than half a century in France. Though you mention the impact of world events – the Beatles, the Iraq war, 9/11 – it is from a French perspective. How has the book been received elsewhere? Were you surprised to be nominated for the Man Booker international?
Yes, very surprised. But the book has been well received in Germany and Italy and has been translated into Chinese, so it must have an appeal that is greater than just [as] a history of France. Even if I don’t say it directly, it’s clearly history through an individual life, my life, and through my memory. I am recounting this collective history via my feelings and recollections. The main character is time and its passing, which takes everything with it including our lives.
It is an entirely unsentimental narrative. You reveal very little that is personal: about your family, children, the end of your marriage; you write of sex, but not of love. You mention your mother’s Alzheimer’s, note the look in the eyes of the cat as it is put down, and your jealousy when your former lover finds a younger partner, but the rest is starkly unemotional…
I’m not a writer who focuses on emotions and this is not the subject of The Years. The point is not to speak of the personal. The personal can be gathered through the descriptions of the photos. I fix on a photo [for each decade] and describe the clothes, the light, and place myself in that moment. Through the photos I touch on the death of my father, very briefly, and the children, but I do not speak often of sentiments.
You came from a modest family – your parents ran a small shop – but you went to university. French writers with working-class backgrounds, such asÉdouard Louis, have written about how this distanced them from their families…
It was rare, but I was an only child – my sister died before I was born – and because my mother had a strong personality and loved to read, I was pushed. Yes, it put a distance between me and my family. This distancing was the subject of my first book 40 years ago.
Of the six decades The Years covers, is there any period you look back on as most interesting, formative or happy?
In terms of collective experience, the period just before 1968, the time of the Beatles, until the 1980s was probably the most interesting. On a personal level, the period that has been the most luminous of my life was between the age of 45 and 60, when I had the impression of really being a free woman doing what I want. It was a time of great liberty for me, when I felt good about life.
And now?
Now I’m getting old. I will be 79 this year and there are always those little health problems and tiredness. There’s a woman in one of Simone de Beauvoir’s last books who says there is a douceur[sweetness] in having a long past behind her. That’s one of the feelings one can have at this age and it’s very positive. The last image in The Years, of a woman pictured with her granddaughter, has some of that softness one has when one ages.
 
For me, it’s not just about the story and content, but the form
You describe your developing feminism in the book, but also recount the confusion of women of your generation when confronted with marriage and families. How do you feel about feminism today, particularly the #MeToo movement that has had a mixed reception in France, with Catherine Deneuve saying it’s gone too far?
I was so ashamed for Deneuve when she said what she did… It was the reflection of a group of privileged women. To be honest, I found it… disgusting is the word. I am in absolute agreement with #MeToo. Certainly there are excesses but the important thing is that women don’t accept this kind of behaviour any more. In France we hear so much about our culture of seduction, but it’s not seduction, it’s male domination. The abuse is not just in the sexual domain – it’s present everywhere, including in literature. Female writers are put forward much less for TV programmes, where there are three men for every woman. There’s this idea that a woman is a novelist and a man a writer…
You say you have always been a vociferous reader. What books have influenced you?
It’s hard to choose. I read Germaine Greer’s The Female Eunuch at a time in my life when reading was important and influenced the way I wrote. Jean-Paul Sartre’s La Nausée, Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex, and Virginia Woolf, a marvellous writer I discovered in my 20s, and Georges Perec. There are books I wanted to read and then I wanted to write like that. For me, it’s not just about the story and content, but the form.
What books are you reading now?
At the moment I’m reading Lauren Elkin’s Flâneuse: Women Walk the City in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Venice, and London. To flâner is such a masculine activity in France and she has appropriated it for women in an interesting way.

PÉREZ REVERTE UN JESUITÓN CURA REBOTADO

Únicamente hable una vez en el Café Gijón con Pérez Reverte. Le dije una frase que en clase de Retórica pregonaba el P. Penagos en Comillas a todos aquellos alumnos que apuntaban maneras: Sic ad astra (tú llegarás, ese es el camino de las estrellas) y el divo. el niño mimado de las literatura en España, el cartagenero, criado a los pechos de Emilio Romero, el superventas, el que vende más libros, se sintió ofendido y marchó. Yo que estuve con los jesuitas me huelo a ex miembros de la Compañía de Jesús a la legua y este Arturo es un jesuita. Nunca pude acabar ninguno de sus libros. No es un novelista al estilo del P. Coloma pero ahí lo tenemos. El periodismo español está plagado de curas rebotados que colgaron la sotana o de frailes que no volvieron a su convento. Tú llegarás a dar con la cabeza en un pesebre mientras otros se quedaron en el camino. Esta foto retroactiva me parece que fue tomada en la Casa de Alcalá al final de los 60. El rostro del novelista mimado por las musas tiene una pinta cura que no puede ni con ella. No sabemos a qué árbol se arrima este murciano para que sea el único español que pueda vivir de la literatura en un mundo que es para los que escriben tiempo de dolor, duelos y quebrantos. ¿Son sus mentores los del contubernio laico judaico?

r, es difícil que llore pero esta mañana de Santa Agueda cuando las mujeres mandan en Zamarramala me llamó Pepe Barcena, relaciones públicas del Café Gijón, elegante pincerna, buen escritor y copero mayor de nuestras libaciones eucarísticas [dice de él Umbral que Pepe con su melenita corta, su servicialidad y su sonrisa le cae bien a las señoras, y muy buen dicho además] para darme la noticia de que había fallecido Alfonso González Pintor El Cerillas, del Café Gijón, una institución en la vida literaria, política y periodística  madrileña de la Transición, se me saltaron las lágrimas por teléfono. Lloré de dolor. Tenía sólo 72 años y daba aspecto de sempiterno joven. Su sepelio fue tan humilde y servicial como su vida entera. Creo que no sólo se nos ha muerto un hombre se ha acabado toda una época
Este humilde menestral, en apariencia, pero una alma grande y un corazón que no le cabía en el pecho, él ponía una gota de almíbar donde todo es hiel y acibar con una de sus humoradas, (¿me escuchas, tú me escuahs? ¿Me quieres? Claro que sí, Alfonsito, no faltaría más. Pero ¿tú me escuchas? No me escuchas, y así arreglábamos el mundo, dale que te pego) munificente en los sablazos que jamás se le olvidaba reclamar por cierto, magnificente en el servir sin ser servil y quedar señor incluso con cabrones que no se lo merecían, pero, en fín corramos un tupido velo, era amigo mío. Como de tanta y tanta gente.
No creo que tuviera enemigos y este justo de Israel que no iba jamás a misa y que a lo mejor no creía en dios pero éste  sí que creía en él, Alfonsito, majo traeme un farias y un paquete de chester, eso está hecho a mandar;  me echó más de un capote, y me empujó hacia el burladero del Gijón, tan tolerante de moros como de judíos que el Gran Café fue siempre el gran cantadero de urogallos desde donde se han orquestado conjuras sabidas por todo el mundo y catasta escaparate con veladores y espejos donde el todo Madrid iba a sentarse a hacer el despeje plaza aunque  uno no llevaba por ejemplo a una novia  que nos las acababa quitando Manolo el Guapo y poco nos importaba que el Loco nos pidiera para un café, oye ¿me dejas quince pesetas? Ten, ya digo; era un santo de Israel sin adscripciones sionistas y él que era el Fúcar de todos nosotros odiaba –bueno lo de odiar es un decir porque no creo que en el corazón de Alfonso González Pintor se albergara una micra de odio- miraba con malos ojos al gran capital. Su padre un minero palentino lo pasó mal y anduvo en prisiones pero no creo que sea verdad lo que dice el Tuercebotas  siempre barriendo para casa que lo fusilaran los nacionales, eso sí me contó una historia enternecedora de su madre y él a lomos de un burro huyendo por los puertos camino de Santander, pedían limosna por los pueblos para sacar de comer. Refugiados. Todos somos refugiados y supervivientes de algo. Y si no hubiera habido ese burladero detrás de la barra que él enfilaba con sus ojos cansados y llenos de sabiduría de hombre de vuelta de todo que ve pasar la vida alzado sobre la humilde tajuela de cerillero que más parecía un trono pues todos los guiriguis nada más que lo diquelaban se quedaban con su estampa hidalga y decían aquí tiene su sede un caballero español a mí me hubiera pillado el toro. Y a otros mucho como yo.
En tiempos de tribulación no hacer mudanza recomendaba Iñigo. Yo me fui para el café Gijón cuando venían mal dadas. Allí estaba Alfonso. Siempre te daba las buenas tardes pero si te notaba de mal humor hacía que no te veía. Hizo la mili en Caballería y fue mozo de espuelas con el Rey, al que llamaba mi Rey o mi Capitán Borbón. Hasta supo alguna anécdota [el nieto de Alfonso XIII era putañero y le gustaba sofaldar criadas y andar en juergas como a todos los monarcas de esa casa que siempre tuvieron fama de golfos] de faldas que no quería contar pues, archivo de la cortesía, era también paradigma de la discreción. Jamás le escuché hablar mal de nadie ni decir nada que pudiera ofender aunque a veces era especialista en chistes malos, en retruecanos y acertijos. Hacía como que dormía y que no escuchaba pero se enteraba de todo lo que decían los de la mesa tras su banqueta que era la de los tertulianos como Manolo Vicent el que decía aquí hay que venir lloraos ¿y con caspa no, Manolo? Tampoco, de Álvaro de Luna, Tito el de “Cuéntame” y otros. Alguna vez se tomaba la licencia de intervenir en la conversación con la anuencia de todos aunque los de esa mesa eran un poco repugnantes y a mí en más de una ocasión me mandaron a tomar por culo pues yo nunca me callo ni escondo mis pareceres. 
Él hizo de este bar un asilo de la inteligencia vencida que se ve cercada como una isla en la vulgaridad ambiente. Habitual de los bancos forrados de terciopelo como los de los Comunes y de sus sillas pasadas de moda he engordado tantos  kilos que ya no me cabía el culo en estas sillerías del coro del cabildo de librepensador. Y allí estaba él.  Siempre igual erecto pues se sentaba tieso para corregir su espalda malhadada por un accidente en la mina y quien lo iba a decir otro absurdo accidente de automóvil sería la causa definitiva de su cita con las parcas.
Se me ha muerto un amigo. Yo le debía muchos favores. A mí me parece que era el alma de este lugar con alma, el último café de Madrid de toda aquella saga “La Fontana de Oro”, el “Lyon”, “Pombo” el “Bilis club” al que no faltaba Clarín en sus visitas a Madrid desde Oviedo.  “Fornos”. “Llhardy”. Todo un florilegio de vida social y literaria llamado al finiquito. Alfonso era el último mohicano y su desaparición física ha coincidido con la implantación de la Ley antitabaco de la ministra esa, con cara de gobernante inglesa empeñada en hacernos a los españoles vivir  más sanos pero con peor mala leche pues allá van leyes do quieren reyes esto es los que tienen el BOE de sartén y de mango. Precisamente los que el bueno de Alfonso creía que eran los suyos. ¡Qué desilusión! Seguro que la palmamos antes.
 Aquí siempre tiene que haber algún guerrocivilista. Hay que hacer la guerra a algo o alguien. Viejos resabios del atavismo ibero ese que pinta Mingote con un garrote y en taparrabos hacioendonos señas. Oye tú pasa para aquí dentro. Que te voy a dar la cena.
 Es el placer de prohibir. A joderse. Antes donde había más de cuatro que cada uno saque su tabaco. Y más de cinco que cada uno se fume el pijo. Ya no. No nos moriremos de cancer de pulmón o de un infarto. Pero a lo mejor un picajoso prurito anal se nos lleva por delante. Descuide, ministra, que aquí nadie va a quedar para simiente. Y si no es del bazo será del espinazo. Empezando por usted que farda incluso de hacer gimnasia en el despacho.  Mens sana in corpore sano. Pero si nos falla la mente a ver qué hacemos con tanto cuerpo cachas pero embrutecido. Veo a los pensionistas solitarios y deprimidos haciendo pedestrismo por el barrio y pienso que mejor estaban echando un tute o en la cantina. A lo mejor estaban menos decontentadizos y habría mucho menos violencia de género.
Bueno lo del pito del después no nos lo quitó aun. Todo se andará. Que ya nos quitan el cigarrillo como después nos quitarán  la siesta. Aunque todo seguirá igual. Hemos salido del no te jode para entrar en el nos ha jodido. Son los perros con los mismos collares. Ahora parece que ladran luego mejor cabalgamos. Buscábamos la celebridad y hemos acabado derrotados anónimos. Estamos seguros de ganar victorias después de muertos.
La pragmática sanción que convierte a la venganza de los indios y sus usuarios en un atajo de apestados creo que va contra el talante y el talento del hombre hispano (aquí con el cigarrilo o el veguero entre los labios se ha hecho el amor, la guerra, la postguerra, se sellaron amistades y enemistades, se escribieron cartas a la novia, instancias y ultimatums) otrora hubiera provocado un motín, una revuelta popular como la de Esquilache. ¡Cualquiera le recorta las alas del chambergo o los vuelos de un manteo a un español ¡  Hoy el personal se ha vuelto como muy light. Pastueño, acomodaticio. Somos acémilas uncidas a la noria del ir tirando. Ya no quedan españoles como los de antes.
Alfonso era uno de ellos. Había mañanas que le veía coger el 27 o el 45 en Atocha. Era un castizo vallecano y creo que del Rayo.  Primero iba al estanco y cargaba con bolsas su tenderete, su chisconcillo, villano en su rincón desde donde veía pasar la vida sin cortejar jamas a la codicia o a la ambición, un secretaire muy coqueto con infulas de bargueño de madera noble. Siempre que se iba cerraba con llave la gabeta. En los alambres pendían billetes de lotería, postales, mecheros, chiclés. Condones no pero alguna vez se los pidió algún cliente en apuros y ese no era Manolo el Guapo que siempre llevaba consigo cajas por un por si acaso.
 Era toda una estampa del ayer. Y con él ha pasado una era. Se nos ha muerto nuestro tiempo. Una vividura. Alfonso descansa en paz dondequiera que estés. Al volver del tanatorio de la M30 y de abrazar a su viuda y deudos, una hija y un chico que es clavadito a él, y que vive en Londres, enfilé los carriles de la A6 mi alma esponjada de tristeza tras el adios para siempre al amigo pero llena de paz. Era la paz que siempre transmitía él.

SAN JOSÉ Y SAN ANTONIO DE PADUA DOS GRANDES TAUMATURGOS DE LA IGLESIA DE OCCIDENTE

SAN ANTONIO Y SAN JOSÉ DOS EPÍGONOS DE LA CASTIDAD VARONIL

A mis 74 años que ayer cumplí otros no llegaron no estoy para muchas tonterías pero sigo en la misma brecha de siempre.
 San Antonio de Padua vino con el niño en la mano y con los días claros y radiantes los mejores del año palabra radiante Arca del Testamento y era tan elocuente que las avecicas del cielo se paraban a escuchar cuando predicaba. También entendía el idioma de los peces.
Felicidades a los Añtoñitos y Antoñitas y a los Pepes porque en nuestros pueblos era nombre común el nombre de José Antonio un binomio para unir a los dos arquetipos de la castidad.
La religión católica abandera en la teología josefina y antoniana el postulado de la virginidad varonil un tema que impugnan las otras dos religiones del Libro. El monoteísmo muslímico  la rechaza como una maldición de Alá. Los judíos a su vez ven en la esterilidad un castigo. Los patriarcas del antiguo testamento tuvieron muchas mujeres. David pecó con Betsabé y decretó la muerte de su marido. Salomón se acostó con la Reina de Saba. Matusalén tuvo numerosas coimas y vivió largos días. Los cristianos sed perfectos como mi padre celestial es perfecto quisieron seguir los pasos del Maestro que nació de una virgen, guardó continencia toda su vida lo que siempre fue piedra de escándalo para los de la sinagoga, y adoptó el levirato nazareno de los que no bebían ni vino ni sidra y se guardaban de todo comercio con mujer. Los limpios de corazón verán a Dios.
Sólo a los castos les corresponde con derecho la prerrogativa de la taumaturgia.
San Antonio y san José son los santos más milagreros del añalejo y las epactas del santoral litúrgico.
Teresa de Jesús ponía bajo la protección de todos los conventos que fundara ( “el casto José me protege y no me niega nada”) a resguardo de este santo varón del que se sabe muy poco al ser citado sólo un par de veces en los evangelios, y del que los apócrifos cuentan que fue escogido para tutor de Jesucristo entre muchos galileos a los que Dios mandó ir al Templo con una vara de peral en pleno invierno.
Hubo una ordalía. Puestos en hileras los aspirantes a la paternida del Mesías, después de aquella parada de identificación únicamente la vara de José floreció. Obtuvo el puedo.
Tampoco el cándido glorioso y divino Antonio dulce santo portugués conoció mujer a lo largo de sus días. Canónigo de Coimbra cuando llegaron a Lisboa las reliquias de unos santos misioneros franciscanos que habían sido degollados por los moros de Ceuta, decidió entrar en la orden seráfica para ir a predicar a los mahometanos. Zarpó con otros frailes rumbo a Berbería pero cerca de Agadir la nave fue acometida por una borrasca y no alcanzaron su destino. La corriente les arrastró hasta un puerto italiano.
Antonio acaba en Padua. Predicador eximio martillo de herejes y el Arca del Testamento sanaba enfermos, resucitaba a los muertos, leía conciencias y delataba el porvenir a sus penitentes. Tenía el don de profecía, el don de lenguas, el de la bilocación porque lo vieron subido a un púlpito en Poitiers a la vez que en Padua. Practicante de la compasión y de la caridad, socorría a los menesterosos. El paño de lágrimas de los afligidos y el pan de los pobres era este fraile. Fue un escogido que conmovía a las multitudes europeas en el siglo XIII. Y esos poderes taumatúrgicos, a decir de los entendidos, emanaban del hecho de que en su vida cometió un pecado mortal. En los cuadros y su culto y su popularidad estuvieron muy extendidos en España durante el pasado siglo ▬ un cromo del santo presidía la cabecera de muchas alcobas y adornaba las paredes de comedores y salitas de antaño con un ramo de flores de azahar o con un lirio ▬   y no faltaba en muchas casas una revista que editaban los franciscanos de Palencia “El Pan de los Pobres” o el “Promotor de la Devoción”.
Igual que la vara florida del casto José. Se me vienen a la memoria aquellos siete domingos de San José en los inviernos de mi adolescencia. Fueron los padres josefinos los que me enseñaron la doctrina cristiana y los que nos prepararon para el seminario. En el esposo de la Virgen se preconiza la oscuridad y su vida oculta, su sencillez y su amor al trabajo pues dicen las escrituras “¿No es este el hijo de Maria y del carpintero no se llama su padre José y sus hermanos Jaime, Juan y Judas”, se escandalizaban sus paisanos de Nazareth?
Treinta años de vida oculta y de esa humildad y sencillez de un obrero ▬ faber así lo describe san Lucas: el que trabaja con sus manos ▬ así como las dudas que debió de padecer el santo varón y padre putativo al enterarse de que su mujer estaba encinta fueron remunerados por Yahvé ( El que es sinónimo de Eloy, el Creador, los hebreos no se atreven  a llamar a Dios por su nombre, tal es su profundo respeto y aversión a la blasfemia) con esas facultades extraordinarias para hacer prodigios que sólo concede a los continentes y abstinentes.
Yo me encomendé a san Antonio en agosto de 1975 cuando volaba de Madeira a Londres. Nuestro avión  incendió uno de los motores pero logramos aterrizar (una verdadera odisea tengo por cierto que fue un milagro de mi santo onomástico) y mi mujer y yo regresamos de viaje de novios salimos indemnes tras lanzarnos desde el ala del aparato. Bueno; ella sólo con una fractura del tobillo. Llegó a Londres escayolada. Bien comenzaba nuestra vida nupcial…
San José por el que sienten un cariño especial los conversos o sentimos una estampa suya que llevaba adosada al pecho cuando hacia un reportaje como detentebala en Belfast me libró de los disparos de una paracaidista británico que patrullaba en un blindado por una zona donde yo hacía fotografía de suerte que ahora entiendo la frase de Santa Teresa “Soy devota del Rey David y de san José que no me niegan nada cuando acudo a ellos en auxilio”

MAQUINA DE ESCRIBIRes el piano de las ideas lo mismo que el tablero del ordenador y era por aquellos días todo un instrumento de precisión. Su inventor se llama Wetereeng y piensa que es una forma de acelerar y de transformar la existencia. El pensamiento acude con demasiada precipitación a la cabeza. Es un producto del maquinismo exagerado y finisecular. A la vieja WETERENG  que así se llamaba el inventor suceden las portátiles. Ortega Munilla en la exposición universal de parís de 1989 nos da idea del suceso.

EDWARD THE CONFESSOR

 When I went to England for the second time in October 1966, the whole country was in celebration and ephemeredes of the founder of English monarchy, Edward III the Confessor.
 I arrived late to the school where I was supposed to teach Spanish in two secondary schools one was run by the state and the other was catholic an it was first there I me the philistine Paul Preston; he was my pupil in the sixth form a sort of very thick bloke but very conceited as an assistant four days late. I nearly got the sack.
The headmaster was mad for my lack of punctuality. Oh boy these Spaniards always siesta drinking sangria, thinking of sex, eating olives and oil and riding donkeys. Hull up north by the Humber was the dullest town an inhospitable of my whole life. What a grotty place! Also I starved.
 The grant I received from the Government was insufficient: if I paid the rent, I did not eat, and if I ate I was always in arrears with my grudging landlady who was an old bird who spend all her days looking through the windows panes at the traffic of Beverley road very scarce on those days. All her meagre pension went, as she was an animal lover and member of the Society of cat lovers, and feeding seven cats one of them was a civet cat big and fat it was castrated, randy sort of devil who went courting and womanizing in the freezing January nights and got involved in fights with rival males, received scratches and one love-quarrel left him one-eyed.
 It seems that the poor eunuch was the favourite. Its name was Persha and she talked to it as it the poor fleecy feline was her baby.
Miss Simpson was lonely and quiet very thin and grudging she left written notes and posted them underneath the threshold door. Always complaining of the misdemeanour of tenants.
 One day she passed away. I think she starved herself. Her budget was much in fags, and little in solid food, I think she only ate biscuits. We had to find other abodes. The house was close on her decease.
 She had lung cancer and heard her suspicious cough many a night downstairs. The England I encountered had nothing to do with the old merry England I dreamt ad learnt in books: cathedrals, cottages, nice pubs and songs, Shakespeare.
 There was no cathedral in Hull a town which had been destroyed by the Luftwaffe bombers during the blitz: the harbour was horrid and still in ruins. I never have been in such grotty places. Hull held the record for the ugliest women of the world and most horripilate tarts in the whole planet. You smelled poverty every where.
 Most of the men were on the dole and still there was rationing.
 In Beverly a mile away there was a Minster but the cathedrals in England had nothing to do with the idea I preconceived from them. They were monuments to British patriotism. Britannia was a religion.
 I realized that since God is an Englishman. Anglicanism became a sort of religion based on the Bible and the hatred to the pope. The Beatles blasted their songs. English wives ran away with the milkman. Mr Harold Wilson lived in number ten Downing Street and there were strikes and Trade Unions. And sittings in and anti Vietnam War demos. Make love not war. Those were the sixties. Where was Edward the Third? No where. People stopped going to church and parsons preached to empty congregations.
I bought myself a transistor and heard my favourite programme Ten of the pops. Girls dressed mini skirts and there was black and white TV. There was David Frost with that was the week that was, Alf Garnet and the Two Ronnies.
 I understood the congenial English but could not follow the conversation in the Yorkshires dialect. We are blunt and down to earth you know. Where was Edward the confessor? Where the old merry England of my dreams? I had read many books on Medieval England but even the British medievalists they drive on the left and they had their own peculiar ideas and won’t tolerate a foreigner to tell them what to do and things are they are. I was looking for Edward the Confessor and I found Perfidious and fastidious Albion. And milk ´goat. The Brits are milks goats. They don’t mix with anything. Good insulars. Abroad they hold on the balance of power and they don’t have friends but interests. That’s it British interests. Pride and prejudice that was a rule in the character of those northerners and they are proud and prejudiced and they could become nasty and xenophobic. In the staff room the other masters looked at me with a chip on their shoulder. Oh dear I never could become an English. What disillusionment. I never shall become one of hem.
At the doldrums, I spent half of the time reading since all half my allowance went to the book shops and the other half in beer and chasing the mini skirts.
 Without boasting the thought I was an Italian and they got romantic and sang to me the song oh Antonio selling good lollipops and ice cream. Your lodgings or mine that was the question on the Saturday night. And we tossed a tanner in the air and it was love at first sight. Please not the whole way. I am not in the pill. A dissipated life I lead and I sinner I was those days but it was easy to score in those days of the swinging sixties looking Italian speaking good English and without being too handsome having feeling. On their arms I felt like a gigolo. A man object I felt. And the one of the first words I learned was wily. How is your wily, mate? Ready for Virginia, then. Let’s go. Come on. Your place. My place.
 Hull and London girls liked Latin lovers. They used me like a disposable nappy. Mea culpa. Mea culpa.
But where was old the confessor? That year was the ninth centenary of the battle of Hastings. The British defeated the Danish.
 King Edward the confessor 1004-1066 lived in the dark middle ages when the bishop of Rome died by poison. He tried to raise the standards of English Christendom. He built the abbey of Westminster. It was the time of the investitures. His personality has come to us shrouded in the mist of myths and legends.
 All we know for certain is that he defeated the Vikings and had to suffer exile and the misunderstand of her mother- terrible shortcoming, the king had to put up with his maternal ingratitude and became a saint by means of tolerance and patience- who married Knut his best enemy who plundered with the Vikings all the coast of East Anglia.
 Edward descendant of Alfred the Great spent most of his live in the exile in France and was crowned in the abbey of Westminster.
 He married another saint and queen Sancta Edita.
 In my apartment of Beverley road, damp with falling wall paper and with a gas heater which cost me a fortune you had to keep patenting shillings in the slit and hardly and went that terrible winter of 56 without electricity for lack of payment, I meditated shivering underneath my craggy blankets and half starving about this mysterious king.
 He was a kind o of anticlimax. I thought that the confessor of the Faith was only in my head. He did not exist.
 Nearly naked or in rags like most of poor students, I bought clothes at pawn shops and dowdies.
 I smoked woodbine and N.6 horrid cigarettes and mean and down to earth like the Northerners I came across. They made you cough and no wonder they gave lung cancer to my good landlady. I was a regular at the Bull a rough pub at the intersection of Beverley and Nottingham road. My teaching was a disaster.
I had a fight with that Paul Preston because of Franco. He is now a very renowned historian of the Spanish Civil war. Preston hated Spaniards. I could not stand him.
 In spite of that I saved my pennies for tickets at local pubs and the dancing halls. There was one dancing called the Locarno I remember well... There I met nymphomaniacs. They liked quickies in the street alleys too call or on the back of a car.
But where was Edward the confessor? Not in Hull the dull. That king was a sort of fiasco. All England was a kind of fiasco. I learnt the language and I learned love and the facts of life the hard way.
 Of course England had me in a way but it was tough and very disappointed in those bad old days.

We offer unto Thee, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching Thy clemency, that it may ascend before Thy divine Majesty, as a sweet savor, for our salvation, and for that of the whole world. Amen.
