Implicaciones canónicas

La pena por convertirse en miembro de la Logia Masónica es la excomunión. 1) la presente disciplina canónica permanece en plena vigencia y no ha sido modificada en forma alguna;

2) en consecuencia, ni la excomunión ni las demás penas previstas han sido abrogadas;

Dos años después, el 26 de noviembre de 1983, tras la promulgación por el Papa Juan Pablo II del nuevo Código de Derecho Canónico, surgió una duda pública sobre si esa pena había sido eliminada o no en el nuevo Código. El cardenal Ratzinger, ahora jefe de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, respondió con una intervención extraordinaria, confirmada in forma específica por el Papa Juan Pablo II. El pasaje clave del cual dice:

Por lo tanto, el juicio negativo de la Iglesia con respecto a la asociación masónica se mantiene sin cambios ya que sus principios siempre se han considerado irreconciliables con la doctrina de la Iglesia y, por lo tanto, la pertenencia a ellos permanece prohibida. Los fieles que se inscriben en asociaciones masónicas se encuentran en estado de pecado grave y no pueden recibir la Sagrada Comunión.

No es competencia de las autoridades eclesiásticas locales emitir un juicio sobre la naturaleza de las asociaciones masónicas que implique una derogación de lo anteriormente decidido, y ello en consonancia con la Declaración de esta Sagrada Congregación emitida el 17 de febrero de 1981 (cf. .  El muchacho era hijo de Alonso de Pasamonte un aguador y su mujer Engracia que ejercía la prostitución. El sortilegio se celebró en la localidad de Tembleque.
