 Unamuno the agony of Christianity

Now, after more than half a century, I realize and understand why Father Penagos, our rhetoric teacher in my time in Comilla, had taken a dislike to Don Miguel de Unamuno, whom he called a monkey; and it is that the great Basque writer surpasses Pio Baroja and Pérez de Ayala himself against the Jesuits in his indictments. He couldn't stand them. Nor was his countryman Iñigo de Loyola a saint of devotion. Basque among Basques, and consequently more Spanish than "Pupas" because of that "I understand myself and God understands me", Don Miguel wields his knowledge of Greek like a foil to put the Catholic religion on the bench. "The agony of Christianity" is a theological version of the "I accuse" of the Deyfruss affair. An allegation against the clergy, against King Alfonso XIII and the Heart of Jesus. The king had just consecrated the nation to this Jesuit devotion on the Cerro de los Ángeles. Holy Heart, you will reign. In this devastating book like no other of his, written in Paris, during his exile "paid for" by the dictator Primo de Ribera in 1924 because his professorial assets were not withdrawn, he reflects his doubts about the afterlife, the celibacy of the clerics, their doubts about the pontificate, a disastrous institution because for the professor at the University of Salamanca the guardian of the tomb of San Pedro happens to be a lackey of the antichrist (very strong, right?) Certainly there is something in the gospel that flatters the ear and opens the doors of utopia for us. Writing was the bedside book of the great dreamers.

Unamuno la agonía del cristianismo

Ahora caigo al cabo de más de medio siglo en la cuenta y razón de por qué el P. Penagos nuestro profesor de retórica en mis tiempos comillenses le había cogido ojeriza a don Miguel de Unamuno al que llamaba una mona; y es que el gran escritor vasco supera en sus dicterios a Pio Baroja y al mismo Pérez de Ayala contra los jesuitas.

No los aguantaba. Tampoco su paisano Iñigo de Loyola era santo de devoción. Vasco entre los vascos, y en consecuencia más español que el "Pupas" por aquello de "yo me entiendo y Dios me entiende", don Miguel esgrime como un florete sus conocimientos de griego para sentar en el banquillo a la religión católica.

"La agonía del cristianismo" es una versión teológica del "yo acuso" del affaire Deyfruss. Un alegato contra la clerigalla, contra el Rey Alfonso XIII y el Corazón de Jesús. El rey acababa de consagrar a la nación a esta devoción jesuítica en el Cerro de los Ángeles. Corazón Santo, tú reinarás.

 En este libro demoledor cual ningún otro de los suyos, escrito en París, durante su exilio "pagado" por el dictador Primo de Ribera año 1924 pues no se le retiraron sus haberes de catedrático, refleja sus dudas sobre el más allá, el celibato de los clérigos, sus dudas sobre el pontificado, nefasta institución porque para el profesor de la Universidad de Salamanca el guardián de la tumba de San Pedro pasa por ser un lacayo del anticristo (muy fuerte ¿no?) Pone en tela de juicio el cuarto voto de los jesuitas.

La obediencia de cadáver y las dos banderas que son realidad sólo una para los hijos de San Ignacio. Y se atrevió a decir de ellos lo que nadie dijo que eran tontos, un atajo de pencos que practican la obediencia de cadáver.

Este artículo de sus constituciones-explica don Miguel- es anticristiano como anticristiano es el propio papado, una creación retrógrada instituida por los jesuitas que jugando a la taba con el terror milenarista se sacaron de la manga un texto como las profecías de San Malaquías totalmente apócrifas.

Cuestiona toda la doctrina social de la iglesia alegando que la misión eclesiástica nada tiene que ver ni con la política ni con la beneficencia ni con la lucha de clases.

Son temas muy de actualidad y no sé si el PP Francisco habrá leído a Unamuno. Esta obra estuvo muchos años en el índice pero suscita verdades y dudas de a puño. Eso de la democracia cristiana le sonaba a química azul... Cristo había dicho que es más difícil que un rico entre en el paraíso que un camello pase por el ojo de una aguja demostró que su buena nueva nada tiene que ver con cuestiones económicas ni sociales, con la democracia, la demagogia internacional o el nacionalismo. Evangelio en mano el gran don Miguel les lee la cartilla a los curas, desenmascara su hipocresía jesuítica y su cinismo.

El cristianismo es un edificio cimentado sobre grandes retóricas, un ensamblaje de palabras pues retor era san Pablo su fundador, retor san Agustín y otros padres del desierto. Creo que al profesor de griego en su orgullo se le va la mano aunque nunca discutiremos sus definiciones geniales al respecto porque en su análisis se queda en la cáscara y nunca llega al alma del cristianismo, ese "quid divinum" que pulsará la historia hasta el final de los tiempos indestructible cuando tantos quisieron destruirlo.

Unamuno copia a Tolstoi pero a pesar de sus cognomentos helenistas no había llegado a oír cantar un tropario a los monjes de Athos o escuchar la homilía de un idumeo ruso. ¿Eunucos? ¿Solicitadores desde el confesionario? Vale. Que Jerusalén era una ciudad sucia donde brotaba la ignorancia, la pereza y la mendicidad hacia principios del siglo XX, pues también.

Así y todo en la palabra in principio erat Verbum se cimienta la gran fábrica de la Revelación. A Cristo no se le puede entender si no se le describe como el Gran Eleuterio (libertador) y eso no lo supo entender el gran profesor de griego. Se fija en la obra del "diablo" (diábolos quiere decir acusador, provocador) que camina al paso de marcha de la Iglesia en su tránsito por la tierra a través de los siglos, en medio de las angustias, las calamidades, las grandes guerras, las crueldades humanas, los gatuperios y conjuras, las excomuniones, los obispos libeláticos, los eunucos que se castraron para ganar el reino de los cielos y demuestran en su aproximación a la religión una piedad poco viril y feminoide.

Esta genial invectiva de don Miguel de Unamuno, el gran contreras, el "una mona" y "una leche" del P. Penagos, contra el depósito de las Verdades a mí me reafirman en él;  mas, la palabra se oye. "Pablo- escribe pag. 70- cuando fue arrebatado al séptimo cielo, (posiblemente en un ataque epiléptico) oyó dichos indecibles y una música maravillosa. La Samaritana oyó al Cristo y Sara ya vieja tuvo un hijo por la fe. Raab la puta, por la fe se salvó". Ciertamente hay en el evangelio algo que halaga el oído y nos abre las puertas de la utopía.

La escritura fue el libro de cabecera de los grandes soñadores pero también de los grandes heresiarcas de los intolerantes, semilla de bienandanza y de desavenencias y crueldades. Pura contradicción emanante del pensamiento judío siempre oscilando entre dos cabos. He aquí que don Miguel descubre una lucha entre los fariseos a cuya rama davídica pertenece el Mesías que creen en la resurrección de la carne y los saduceos que la niegan y se muestran a favor del bienestar material.

De estas dos ramas de Israel la una mística y la otra progresista comulga el catolicismo. Son dos fuerzas que luchan a muerte. ¿Quién ganará la partida? Esa pregunta es el tema: la agonía, la lucha del cristianismo plasmada en este inquietante libro levantando la veda para cazar siniestras liebres que pueblan de fantasmas al mundo actual.

A long and tiring walk I did through the pleasant woods and nostalgia shining the last sun for the day in askance rays in an evening June backwards and forwards north of Retire Pond.
A perusal of routine of every year. It was more than 40 years since I bought my typewiter. Hardly a day passed without the touch of the keyboards. I am a compulsive eater, a compulsive smoker and a compulsive scribbler. Compulsions and passions and impulses that what my life made.
Icarus tries to fly to heaven. Tantalus cleans the equerries of the stygian lagoon and at the end of the journey we are in between Scylla and Caribdis.
They don’t give a fart. They don’t listen. On my hands I brought the Diogenes torch searching for the flame of wisdom, knowledge and perception. But the Deus absconditus in this paean society any more none is these days.
With that candle you look an outsider, a Looney. Too many books garbage literature, a dizzyingly amount of titles laying in the stands of booksellers for use and disposal. User y tirar, but a new author was signing his bestseller.
I never sat on such a throne of the Nine Muses.
It is hard to be an unpublished writer. They regard you as an alien from far planet. The devil laughter swung from the branches from the maple trees.

Then noticing that the poor animal had not one of his legs,. he had eaten it up himself. I felt sorry for him.

The magpie spread then its big black wings –it is bad omen- and disappeared. I carried on walking. This job is hard but nice. You sit down and you write. You row. Your pen is like a paddle. Your pen is sword. Sometimes you feel remiss or indolent at your desk and yielding to dismay all writers ask themselves the same question. What is this, what am I doing? Your piece is like the message in the bottle the survivor of the ship wreckage launch to the Ocean. Is there any one at the other end?
You never know. still ought not to be despondent, when fame skips your lucks or when the prow of your novel, essays, poems, sail against the odds of misfortunes. Not all of us can live in the mainstream but publish and be damned. Big brother is watching you.

As I walked past the stands I had the uncomfortable impression that most of the being published is menial and ancillary. There they were sitting the flatterers of the Establishment, the moaners of the Gaols who were telling the untrue story of their prisons that never were. Plauto resurrected to write his Miles Glorious. They eat at their big dinners and they leave crumbs and pellicles for you.
Sing and whistle.
-I did not see you in the big fair. Either you are too good to be truth or a real failure.
-I can I assure you I don’t feel a failure. I am full of beams and ready for a big fight. One day we shall unmask the big traitors. Pray god and pass the ammunition but we won’t need guns and bullets or gig sticks. Only word and roses provided that the prentices of the big moaning has become a new religion. Nemesis is their goddess and they are waiting in the wall the word rage. I was a bit disquietened but proud. I did NOT lick the backsides of the new priests preaching Lager.

One more and another one. When I tumbled the seventh glass, I took the attraction from the waiter. His name was Alfonso and he wore a white jacked unpolluted to seve champagne to the Laureate Poets. In El Gijon they call him Mr. Prix. He is the lackey of the famous. No body give a fuck, none cares.

-Celebrating?
-Of course
-And what are you celebrating, mister, if I may ask.
- I am wetting the head of those infants murdered by the abortists, the hymens that never were pierced on wedding nights, and all those broken promises and the books that never were born by the decision of the new priest.. Herodes lives somewhere in Jerusalem. Had many followers.. Herodias, my life for a dance, walks down to the cellar with the head of the decapitated Precurssor and patron of all the misunderstood literates.
Alfonso shook his head in disbelief.
-Those poets….- he muttered as he transported his tray full of schnapps to the customers drinking and gossiping in the big veranda. A few journalist from Madrid were having a big do.
That is how I celebrated the big fracas of the Bookfair. The stallion in the distance meadows neighed for their mares. Beautiful señoritas were flirting. Writers were getting pissed. When the bell struck ten with last ordered please my bowels nearly moved but only came a ferocious and alarming fart, like a thunder in gle the shot of a gun in the battle of Navrone.. Get it out of your system. Puke it out.

The entire world became blank. What is the purpose of this strife of literature? Who cares? Who reads? I was very naif in the middle of my alcoholic spree and I did not realize that every one was voting in the election casting fatal verdicts at the polls. If no body wants to listen it is meaningless to preach. If they don’t want to read better that the scribblers all over the world change their jobs and do something positive. Writers we are in vain. We are the forced to the ominous galleys of Internet where the bread is bitter and no pay.
We are dead souls. Yes.

GABRIEL MIRÓ ORFEBRE DE LA PALABRA

 

GABRIEL MIRÓ NUESTRO PADRE SAN DANIEL

 

 

Para hispanistas y filólogos y todos los que amamos las viejas palabras la prosa de Gabriel Miró nos lleva al mundo de los paraísos perdidos.

 Ya sé que algún modorro que nos lea se quejará de que autores como él pidan el esfuerzo de tener que abrir el diccionario y que el de la RAE en esta involución que nos aflige haya dado de mano la vieja lexicología como antiguallas inservibles y fenecidas voces del idioma popular; éste se reduce y se limita a la jerga urbana quedando circunscrita a ese lenguaje urbano, mímico y coprológico, un verdadero signo apocalíptico. El castellano está siendo vapuleado por un inglés macabro y macarrónico.

Toda esa gacería de baja estofa del Bronx que penetra a través de los sitcoms y el lenguaje gangster vía Jolivú. Con ello el alma del mundo se empobrece a marchas forzadas. De la racionalidad volvemos a la irracionalidad.

 El mensaje que lanzan epígonos semicientíficos como Eduardo Punsete ese malos pelos que habla y entrevista en  la 2 no se cansa de repetir el mensaje de que el hombre viene del mono.

 Por eso es todo un hallazgo volver a las novelas de Miró (El Obispo Leproso, Años y Leguas, las Cerezas del Cementerio etc.)

In principio erat Verbum. Dios creó primero la palabra. Después llenó el universo de cosas y vio que el mundo estaba bien hecho. Y a continuación formó al hombre del barro y a Eva de su costilla según el Génesis. Gabriel Miró resucita este vocabulario de léxicos que resultan como un fucilazo, exvotos testimoniales de una sociedad que se fue, pero el habla rica de los campesinos españoles de Levante perdura.

 Nuestro padre san Daniel es un retablo de las maravillas en prosa preciosista que pinta la vida de una ciudad episcopal Orihuela (Oleza) a comienzos del pasado siglo. En frases que parecen hechas para ser esculpidas en sojas o en tiras de mármol. Su pluma no está hecha de encañadura de ave, se escuda Miró. Es de hierro como un cincel. Puede que recargue un poco y que a fuerza de este prístino afán intente Miró ponerle los paños al púlpito como hacían los predicadores de campanillas antiguamente. Es un escritor litúrgico. El lector encuentra ornamentos del viejo culto eclesiástico que venían del rito visigótico.

 Fueron suprimidas por el concilio Vaticano II (hacheros, navetas, gremiales, gorjales, tunicelas, crismeras, casullas, píxides, epactas, corporales, viriles, hijuelas, brinquiños, sartales,  antipendios, frontales que adornaban el paramento del tabernáculo, las cáligas o zapatillas de seda laborada y el cenojil  azul que sujeta las medias de los obispos) el cristianismo proviene de los misterios órficos y no es tan sólo letra muerta sino la búsqueda y procura de un ideal

Vida tranquila y provincial a la sombra del campanario cuando todo poseía un principio y un fin es cuanto refleja este libro. Las onomásticas de los apóstoles, los mártires, confesores y doctores o las doce fiestas del calendario cristiano medían el tiempo. “Oleza criaba capellanes como Altea marinos y Alicante turroneros”. Prosa serena que contempla el circular de las estaciones y el nacer, morir y vivir de los personajes que describe con la pasmosa elegancia en que giran los azudes y azahares de una noria.

Es un mirar levantino hacia el paisaje de una zona que en lucha contra los piratas berberiscos (Cartagena, cabo de Palos, Malva Rosa valenciana o Peñíscola) defendió a la catolicidad. Los prelados entraban en posesión de su diócesis a lomos de una mula blanca. Saltan a la palestra clérigos de misa y olla, jesuitas místicos como  el Padre Bellod, don Magín, y don Jeromillo (cura pobre y cura rico). Se escucha en toda la novela el toque de Ánimas junto con el frufrú de las sotanas y sobrepellices, la campanilla del Viático, surtidores de patio claustral donde rezan el breviario los seminaristas ordenados in sacris deambulando por el claustro. Se escucha el bisbiseo de las viejas en las catedrales oscuras donde la piedra rezuma el vaho de los siglos, o la voz baja de particulares que pedían audiencia al señor obispo, escribanos, testamentarias que recogían las mandas de los moribundos en donaciones pro ánima que han servido de baluarte económico de la iglesia. Se percibe, todo sensual, muy gráfico, llamando a las cosas por su nombre, el tiemblo de los dijes al pasar las cuentas del rosario de plata de las devotas. Crujen los agremanes, blondas y azabaches de raso o deslumbran los estrados de damasco y el brillo de anillos de oro y pectorales todo de perlas. Un estilo majestuoso, solemne y episcopal.

 A Gabriel Miró hay que leerlo  despacio y no sólo con los ojos sino con el oído, el gusto, el olfato, el tacto. Hay que poner los cinco sentidos para captar sus descripciones de una sensualidad fruente que se goza en el hallazgo de la palabra exacta.  Esta zona en que se desarrolla la trama era un viejo reducto carlista que leía a Aparisi Guijarro y lanzaba vivas a Cristo rey y a Carlos sétimo.

Esta es la España de los curas trabucaires. La guerra de la Independencia abrió una sima en el seno de la Iglesia entre curas liberales o serviles y absolutistas. La mayor parte de los curas hicieronse carlistas.

 El obispo lució sobre su cabeza la barretina catalana hoy símbolo de la independencia de aquella región tan española y que fue  insignia de los alzados contra el liberalismo jansenista. Sin embargo era un hombre triste que vivía en un palacio inmenso con una huerta rodeada de viales de naranjos y de magnolios en medio de una gran soledad.

 Otro de los personajes: Caracortada que vive arruinado, pues dio todo sus caudales para la Causa. Se ha convertido en  pobre de pedir desde que fue herido por un sargento pesetero cuando su compañía mandada por el general Cabrera el Tigre del Maestrazgo fue atacada por soldados isabelinos. Dentro de este mundo idílico sin embargo no todo es lo que aparece. La sobrehaz de esta armonía de la ciudad episcopal son las pasiones, las envidias y enconos.

El odio que siente el mutilado carlista hacia el cacique don Álvaro alcanza proporciones homéricas. En una de sus magnificas descripciones las de las vísperas de San Pedro el autor hace contrastar la magnificencia del presbiterio claustral con la pobreza de la feligresía; unas cuantas viejas y unos mesegueros que se duermen durante la ceremonia.

 El boato de los ornamentos contrasta con los harapos con que se cubre el pueblo llano. El padre Bellod sube al arrabal de san Ginés una montaña donde la población carece de viviendas, los niños van desnudos y los moradores entre aguas reciales, bardomeras y pringues malviven, se alimentan de los higos chumbos que brindan los nopales o van a robar fruta al huerto de unos frailes o a la cerca del cura Jeromillo. Pudiera decirse que uno de los personajes es el hambre aunque Miró no es un escritor social.

 Simplemente se preocupa por esa dicotomía entre el ideal inalcanzable que propone la iglesia que busca en su gestión la utopía y la penuria de las  gentes irredentas a las que predica y sestean durante el sermón. El escritor se hace cargo de este fracaso. Lo agrio, lo feo, lo sórdido de la existencia contrasta con la hermosura y la contemplación estética. A los pobres siempre les tendréis con vosotros. Axioma bíblico.

Es el mayor ecologista de nuestra literatura. Hasta el siglo XIX nuestros literatos se habían despreocupado del campo. No hay paisaje por ejemplo en nuestra novela picaresca.

Él se constituye en el mejor paisajista y soberbiamente describe la mies que orea en las hazas de terreno y cabecean movidas por el viento cuando huele a junio. O las clases de frutas que da esta región del maestrazgo: albérchigos, sabrosísimas cermeñas o peras rabonas, bergamotos, zamboas, dátiles, naranjas, pomelos, cerezas, nopales que trajeron los moros y los españoles llevamos a Méjico, o el vino fondillón  o rancio de Alicante, vino  de consagrar el que llevan en las vinajeras los niños misarios. Uno se convierte a medida que avanza la lectura en acólito de esa gran eucaristía mística que brinda la naturaleza abundante y feraz.

El ambiente curial y levítico en el que se desenvuelve recuerda un poco a la Regenta de Leopoldo Alas pero a Miró escultor de retablos –Figuras de la Pasión-le falta vis dramática.

La acción es lenta y la urdimbre, débil en medio de una prosa triunfal y selecta, tan sensual que el lector parece oler a búcaros de glicinias o contempla la magnificencia de los oficios religiosos en la catedral de Orihuela con aquellos chantres y el precentor que sube a cantar el evangelio detrás de la cruz alzada flanqueado por dos lampisteros o turiferarios.

 Miró los embaúla en un argadillo de lexicografía selecta. Una sonrisa abacial y un obispo que bendice tocado con una mitra con forma de boca de pez. Los jardines de los monasterios, dice, han enriquecido las vocaciones y el lenguaje castellano. Un clérigo fumador habla en la sacristía  con voz gruesa entre vellones de humo. Se ven argollas en las puertas de nogal que delimitaban antiguamente la jurisdicción de la tierra de asilo y en los sillares de las pilastras catedralicias aun se percibe la herida de la gubia del picapedrero que las labró, operarios anónimos, de los que nada se dice, nada se sabe. John 1, 1-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was made nothing that was made: in Him was life, and the life was the Light of men; and the Light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to testify concerning the Light, that all might believe through Him. He was not the Light, but he was to testify concerning the Light.
That was the true Light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world. He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him to them He gave power to become sons of God, to them that believe in His Name, who are born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. Here all kneel. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us: and we saw His glory, the glory as of the Only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
