While many of us will make a beeline for the stunning cliffs of Flamborough during summer there is one hidden bay that is perfect for a winter stroll.

Thornwick Bay is a stunning area of coastline with secret coves, caves and rock formations that can be mesmerising.

I have passed this bay many times but have always been put off by the caravan holiday park which gave me the sense that the road was private.

Also, its feeling of being hidden would disappear in summer with park visitors populating the bay.

However, this is a beautiful and remote area during the winter months - and more so on New Year's Day.

You will see the signs for Thornwick Bay just before you reach Flamborough’s North Landing.

Park up at the end of the road where it splits off into two private roads.

You then follow a narrow path down towards the bay and you will get great views of the bay from above.

There are stunning white chalk cliffs which you find at Flamborough and down to Bridlington.

On a still winter’s day the bay is incredibly tranquil as you gaze at the waves lapping on the shore.

But it is the rock formations that set the bay apart from others.

The rocks are smooth with an odd combination of green and pink. At low tide you can walk round and through a stunning archway.

However, the tide was just coming in when I arrived.

But there were still plenty of rock pools to explore with fish and crabs populating the water-filled crevices.
