QUI veux-tu que je crucifie, cria le préteur, au roi des Juifs, à Jésus le Nazaréen ou à Barabbas. La populace vomit un dicton terrible, un cri dont l'écho se répercute à travers l'histoire.


−À Jésus Nazaréen.


−Regem vestrum crufigam ? Le laisser crucifier votre roi ?


−Il n'est pas notre roi


Pilate, qui venait de recevoir le message de sa femme, était sûr que Jésus était innocent et ne savait que faire. Le nom de Barabbas résonne comme le tonnerre depuis les chaires chaque Vendredi Saint. Les synoptiques ne sont pas très explicites à son sujet, ils nous disent qu'il était un voleur, un pilleur de caravanes dans les montagnes de Judée. Mais son nom est mentionné plus souvent dans les Écritures que dans les références à la Vierge Marie. San José une seule fois. Ce laconisme est décourageant pour ceux d'entre nous qui suivent le Maître, mais la foi, c'est croire ce que l'on n'a pas vu.


  Par Lagerkvist dans son roman Follow the Apocrypha décrit Bar Rabah (le fils de Rabah) comme un activiste juif qui a lutté contre l'occupation romaine de la Palestine. Il a commis plusieurs meurtres, dont celui de son propre père.


Il se trouvait dans le couloir de la mort le jour de l'affaire.


Une fois libre, il suivit de loin le cortège qui exécuta ce rabbin dont tout le monde parlait dans la Ville Sainte et qui se disait fils de Dieu. Mais le fait qu’il se fasse passer pour le Messie promis mourant sur une croix était inconcevable pour un Israélite.


Ils attendaient un libérateur de chair et de sang qui ferait d’Israël le maître du monde. Le retour à la terre promise, aux fontaines où couleront le lait et le miel. Et il est venu avec des chants d'affection les uns pour les autres, il était l'ami des esclaves et des putes et il a interagi avec les publicains et les agents du trésor qui rendaient hommage aux Romains.


Le premier Vendredi Saint, après avoir mis le pied sur la Montagne du Crâne (pour les Juifs, c'était un endroit impur), il retourna chez un ami qui tenait une maison close à l'intérieur des murs de la ville, il s'enivra avec elle et lui fit l'amour. Une manière courageuse de célébrer Pâques !


  Un autre élève était une mystérieuse hétaïre aux lèvres déchirées en raison d'un défaut physique en bec de lièvre. Suivant ses traces, il se rendit au tombeau où avait été déposé le Nazaréen. La femme au bec de lièvre, voyant que la pierre avait été roulée, se mit à crier… il n'est pas là, il s'est levé. Barabbas, qui le suivait de près, se frotta les yeux, saisi d'une hallucination : il aperçut un séraphin à six ailes avec une épée radieuse et au bout de quelques instants il disparut. La pauvre pute au bec de lièvre revint à Jérusalem pour annoncer la nouvelle et, appréhendée par les agents du Sanhédrin, elle fut condamnée à être dilapidée dans la Géhenne ou dans le Fumier.


  Barabbas, indigné, a assisté au délabrement mais a planté le couteau dans le dos d'un des prêtres sans que l'on sache quand il a ordonné de jeter la première pierre. Malgré cela, il ne croyait toujours pas qu’un Israélite qui venait de subir la mort la plus abominable était le Messie.


Même s’il appréciait ce qu’ils disaient du christianisme, le fait que ce soit une religion d’esclaves et d’esclaves ferait succomber l’Empire romain. Avec le recul, nous voyons Barabbas dans les mines de cuivre, l'un des châtiments les plus terribles.


  Les condamnés à extraire le minerai n'ont pas vécu plus d'un an, mais lui, comme son compagnon Zahah, un Arménien qui était attaché avec des chaînes, des jesses et des haltères pendant toute la durée de sa peine, a été sauvé et a pu remonter à la surface. grâce à sa bonne conduite et au geôlier qui sympathisait avec les disciples de l'homme mort sur la croix.


L'Arménien était chrétien, il refusa de brûler de l'encens aux dieux, il fut crucifié. Barabbas qui a accepté non.


  Des chapitres avant ce roman unique, nous trouvons Barabbas à Rome réhabilité et affranchi dans la maison d'un sénateur. Il ne croyait toujours pas au Rédempteur mais il portait une médaille de cuivre, cadeau de son camarade Zahah, au dos de laquelle il avait peint un poisson eucharistique, symbole des chrétiens des catacombes, et au recto le nom de l'empereur.


Ils eurent des cabales dans les catacombes et un jour Barabbas entreprit de brûler la Ville éternelle. La rumeur s'est répandue selon laquelle les chrétiens avaient déclenché l'incendie alors qu'en réalité c'était la secte juive qui tentait de se débarrasser du joug romain en Palestine par le terrorisme. Bizarre déraison mais c’est ainsi que s’écrit l’histoire. Barabbas a été crucifié avec le groupe accusé d'avoir incendié Roma. Il est mort sur le bâton à côté de San Pedro mais exprimant son scepticisme quant au nouvel ordre que le christianisme a apporté au monde.


  On dira que Lagerkvist était un auteur suédois qui reçut le prix Nobel en 1951. Son roman, que je viens de lire traduit en français avec tous les honneurs d'André Gide, pourrait figurer en annexe des Apocryphes. Après avoir lu le roman vibrant de ce Suédois, je dois dire avec saint André : O bona crux salvum me fac. Gloire à la croix salvatrice, qui accueille les pauvres, les exilés, les pusillanimes, les persécutés, les mutilés qui marchent dans l'anxiété. Oui, le christianisme est une religion d'esclaves.

Erat lux vera, quæ illúminat omnem hóminem veniéntem in hunc mundum. In mundo erat, et mundus per ipsum factus est, et mundus eum non cognóvit. In própria venit, et sui eum non recepérunt. Quotquot autem recepérunt eum, dedit eis potestátem fílios Dei fíeri, his, qui credunt in nómine ejus: qui non ex sanguínibus, neque ex voluntáte carnis, neque ex voluntáte viri, sed ex Deo nati sunt. Genuflectit dicens: Et Verbum caro factum est, Et surgens prosequitur: et habitávit in nobis: et vídimus glóriam ejus, glóriam quasi Unigéniti a Patre, plenum grátiæ et veritátis.

R. Glory be to Thee, O Lord.
John 1, 1-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was made nothing that was made: in Him was life, and the life was the Light of men; and the Light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to testify concerning the Light, that all might believe through Him. He was not the Light, but he was to testify concerning the Light.
That was the true Light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world. He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him to them He gave power to become sons of God, to them that believe in His Name, who are born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. Here all kneel. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us: and we saw His glory, the glory as of the Only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
