Escritores soviéticos gozaron de gran popularidad en España durante el franquismo: Pasternak, Yevtuchenko, Ehrenburg, Bulgakov, Mayakovsky, Suslov (“El Don apacible” y por supuesto los clásicos: Gogol, Dostoyevski, Turguenev, Lermontov, Pushkin. Y sobre todo Chejov el malabarista del humor y la ternura. Ahora nada. Traductores y truchimanes andan en paro con lo hermosa que es la lengua rusa. Se los ha tragado la tierra. No se traduce ninguna obra. No pasan la cordillera de esa inquisición invisible de las denominadas democracias de derecho, pero no de a hecho. El otro día en Kiev los nazis de Zelenski, una noche de Cristales Rotos y Cuchillos Largos que se repiten hicieron una gran fogata. Supongo que arderían las majestuosos producciones de alguno de estos autores. Incoherencia culpable de los políticos occidentales y sobre todo de ese vejestorio que manda en los yanquis y que utiliza a Zelinski como mancebo de botica para alquitarar sus bélicas recetas infernales.

Hay que decir en contra de eso que la literatura rusa es un vivero de grandes artistas. Ahora abro las páginas de una novela que hacía cola en los altillos de mi biblioteca: “Ante el espejo” Planeta 1972.

Su autor Benjamín A. Kaverin  se muestra un consumado malabarista de la novela epistolar aparentemente la más fácil pero abocado a muchos peligros que el autor no evita hasta la segunda parte.

Es la historia de un amor por correspondencia entre una pintora y un matemático desde 1910 hasta 1933, cubre los años trágicos de la revolución, el hambre la guerra civil y la expatriación de Lisa. Su amante apasionada. Es una sublime pasión rusa con drama turco y los sufrimientos de la huida.

Kolia se queda en la URSS. El libro conserva cierto parecido con el Dr. Jibago de Pasternak.

 A lo largo de tres décadas que cambiaron la faz del mundo se cuentan las preocupaciones ilusiones encuentros y desencuentros de una pareja. El autor se inhibe de amarrar detalles sobre el ambiente, pero aparecen las calamidades de toda guerra: los heridos que vienen del frente, el descontento en las trincheras, el derrocamiento de los Romanov a los que se alude de pasada porque Kaverin se centra en la descripción de esta gran pasión por carta.

Bucea en el alma de la protagonista y del deuteragonista. Rusia lo aguanta todo lo que le echen. El arte, la música, la pintura no decae en medio del vaivén revolucionario. Se habla de Gaugin, de Picasso, de Matisse y de los pintores de iconos. Esos cuadros esmaltados a los que se asoman obispos hieráticos, celestiales, que miran desde la serenidad de sus ojos grandes y pasmados revestidos de casullas y capas pluviales adornadas de pedrería de luengas barbas y miradas que advierten del pasmo de la eternidad. Hay un personaje que se llama Lavrov como el eximio canciller y diplomático de Putin que es especialista en Bizancio. Le gusta el vino y el aguardiente “janyá”. Al hablar de Constantinopla se exalta su locuacidad y se le colorean los carrillos. Está también enamorado de Lisa sin resultados.

También hablan de la carestía, del llamamiento a filas de los reservistas, las disposiciones del zemstvo, los prisioneros alemanes en los campos de trabajo, de lo difícil que se había vuelto la vida en Rusia para el ciudadano, a causa de la guerra y las algaradas por las calles de Petersburgo.

 Al caer esta novela en mis manos pienso con dolor que el gran pueblo eslavo debe de estar viviendo similares a los que se cuentan en este libro.

 Lisa lucha contra su idealismo porque en lo del carteo amoroso se pueden crear falsas expectativas sin fundamento. Una cosa es lo que se cuenta y se fabula y otra la realidad. Mucho más árida. Menos poética. Lisa de enamora de otros y acepta entrar en los salones del gran visir como hetaira. Los turcos se pirrían por las bellezas rusas y la pintora era una bella muchacha atormentada y sin recursos.

“Yo mismo me transfiguro cuando cojo la pluma. Brota otro yo que existe dentro de mí pero ese yo no es real”. Kaverin trata de evaluar como un espejismo el primer amor entre la estudiante de Arte de San Petersburgo y un profesor de matemáticas; y eso es el “Espejo” (Zarkalo).  La narración sufre un bajonazo al final de la primera parte pero se rehace cuando Kolia siente celos por la aventura de Lisa con Dimitri.

Rusia queda escindida en dos partes. Constantino se queda en zona roja y Lisa con los blancos. Le escribe desde Sebastopol ocupada por alemanes “presuntuosos que se creen de una raza superior”. Las glicinias allí en esta costa meridional ahora en disputa siguen floreciendo en medio de las botas y los cascos alemanes. Allí conoce a un armenio que le muestra el secreto de la pintura al pastel de las primitivas iglesias románicas del Caúcaso que fueron profanadas por el turco. Él trata de buscar a su amada atravesando peligrosamente la linea del frente en Ucrania. Iría a Kiev y de allí a Odessa y de Odessa a Yalta en barco. Se agenció una documentación falsa. Pero el plan se desbarata ante la muerte de la madre del científico. Elizabeta Nikolaeva ha de abandonar Crimea tan mientras los rojos expulsan a los alemanes.

 Es el poder de la ciega casualidad que quería resolver el matemático. Lisa escribe desde Estambul adonde ha viajado en el barco de un griego que la engaña y compra sus cuadros. En la hostil Constantinopla se ve sin dinero y sin sus cuadros. Se emplea como pianista de un burdel y luego ejerce en una granja del Bósforo de cuidadora de conejos. Se casa con un ruso y se coloca en el palacio de la gran puerta como dragomán o interprete.

 Explica a su amante por qué contrae matrimonio.

“Porque aquí en Turquía una mujer no puede vivir sola”.

Su marido es un muchacho tranquilo oficial del regimiento Probrazhensky los alabarderos del Zar, todo un barin tranquilo y bondadoso que va a la iglesia.

 En la guerra perdió una pierna. La vida es así de injusta y de torpe. ¿Encontraremos el baremo de la razón matemática de la casualidad, del efecto mariposa, o del designio de un destino a priori que todo lo planea de antemano? Los buenos libros hacen pensar al tiempo que enseñan mucho. Un buen novelista como Benjamín Kaverin es un demiurgo.

 La pareja se aloja en una aldea de la costa por nombre Chibluki que acogió a miles de refugiados rusos como está pasando ahora en Ucrania y en Donbass. Grandes guerras. Grandes desplazamientos.

Humanitarias catástrofes, vidas destrozadas. Lichni chiloviek material humano sobrante. A mi tambien como al novelista me domina la sensación de que no le hago falta a nadie. “Estambul es sucio, ruidoso y enigmático. En el cuerno de Oro las rusas tenemos mala fama” “Ruskai debuchka jarashó idi suda” vente conmigo, rusita, corazón.

Es el drama de tener que dedicarse al oficio más viejo del mundo al que se enfrentan las esposas de los vencidos.

 Las solicitaciones sexuales suenan en medio el estruendo de los vendedores del gran bazar y yo casi me acuerdo con Ana Belén en la Pasión turca de Antonio Gala. Pero esto no es el amor sino una forma de ganarse la vida.

  Entretanto la tabernera del puerto se acuerda de sus pintores rusos, de lo fallido que ha sido su existencia en la persecución del ideal de la belleza y el arte. Sus pintores favoritos: Chagal, Blok, Ajmatova, Masjov.

 Todos ellos pertenecen al circulo de pintores del Volga el caudaloso río ruso. Son bateleros del arte de Apeles. Un virrey quiso llevarla de hurí al harén pero ella se negó. Toda esta peripecia de los emigrados es sumamente complicada y es un pronóstico de lo que está ocurriendo en Ucrania ahora mismo por ese judío desalmado llamado Zelenski lacayo del negrero Biden.

 Exprime la nostalgia y el dolor poético de los desplazados. Ivan Bunin se iba a la estación de Austerlitz en Paris para ver partir al Transiberiano. Que le recordaba a su tierra. Nostalgia y melancolía rusa. Tascá.

Pocos pueblos del mundo habrá que amen con tanta añoranza a su tierra. Dicen que hasta que no truena el mujik ruso no se santigua. Pero las cosas fueron así y ocurrió lo irremediable al ser destronado Nicolás II.

Lisa aprende a leer y escribir en turco y dice que es muy entretenido. Kemal Pachá latinizó la escritura cúfica. Lisa la pintora ama, dice, con delirio a Constantino pero se acomoda a las circunstancias en la contradicciones de su condición de mujer y casa por compasión con un mutilado de guerra para al poco tiempo enamorarse de un pintor que se llama Gordiaev. Mujer impetuosa hasta el delirio.

El carácter de esta artista rusa está muy bien descrito. Dicho aliciente exacerba el interés narrativo que hace vibrar al lector con las adversidades que tiene que acometer la protagonista a lo largo de su expatriación

CARTA DEL PAGTRIARCA CIRILO A BARTOLOMÉ DE CONSTANTINOPLA: EL FANAR Y EL VATICANO (UNIATAS) SON CULPABLES DE LA REPRESIÓN QUE SUFREN LOS ORTODOXOS EN UCRANIA

 

A LETTER FROM HIS HOLINESS PATRIARCH KYRILL TO PATRIARCH BARTHOLOMEW ON THE REAL SITUATION IN THE UKRAINE

    

To write this letter to you brings me a deep sense of pain and extreme concern about the situation facing the flock of the Church in Novorossiya (the south and the east of the Ukraine), where a fratricidal civil war has been raging for the last few months. Last autumn, at the beginning of the current Ukrainian political crisis, members of the Greek Catholic (Uniat) church and schismatic ‘Orthodox’ openly preached hatred of the Orthodox Church on Maidan Square in Kiev; they urged the seizure of Orthodox shrines and called for the eradication of Orthodoxy from the Ukraine. Since the outbreak of hostilities, Uniats and schismatics have taken up arms under the guise of an ‘anti-terrorist operation’ and started direct aggression against the clergy of the canonical Church in the Ukraine. Nevertheless, the Church, unlike the Uniats and schismatics, remains alien to political bias. It continues to carry out pastoral care for its faithful, including those who find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict, trying to reconcile them, issuing constant calls for dialogue.

In recent weeks we have received reports from local bishops indicating abuse of canonical Orthodox clergy as they carry out their pastoral duties. Here are a few examples. On 17 July, during the Divine Liturgy in the Church of the Resurrection in Slavyansk, a gang of armed men led by a Uniat military chaplain threatened the rector, Archpriest Vitaly Vesyol. The Uniat ‘priest’ stated that the Church does not belong in the Ukraine and lamented that the authorities would not let the Uniats steal the Monastery of the Kiev Caves. On 19 July junta ‘soldiers’ issued death threats to Archpriest Andrei Chicherinda, Dean of the Nikolaevsk District of the Dioceses of Gorlovka and Slavyansk and harassed and interrogated him, keeping him handcuffed. On 20 July, near Slavyansk, thugs armed with sub-machine guns made Archpriest Vadim Yablonovsky dig his own grave and on the same day they arrested Archpriest Viktor Stratovich, handcuffed him, and took him away with a bag over his head into the woods, where they forced him to grovel on his knees as they interrogated him.

On July 30 in Krasnoarmeiskoe a group of armed men illegally searched the home of Archpriest Igor Sergienko, rector of St Alexander Nevsky parish. They insulted Fr Igor, accusing him of taking part in clandestine organisations, threatened him with torture, demanded that he leave the Ukraine and that he hand over the deeds of the parish property. On the same day, in the Amvrosievska District, Ukrainian troops seized Archpriest Yevgeni Podgorny, showering him with abusive curses, bound him and threw him to the ground. They kicked him, hit him with a rifle butt and fired over his head, to force him to admit that he supported the Home Guard. They tried to force him to take off his priestly cross, but he refused, so they tore if off by force, put a bag over his head and threw him into a pit. Then they threatened to kill his son and robbed his house. Only his parishioners’ intervention saved Fr Igor.

We cannot ignore the fact that the conflict in the Ukraine has unambiguous religious overtones. The Uniats and schismatics are trying to overpower the canonical Orthodox Church, which continues to minister with patience and courage to its suffering faithful in a harsh environment. Priests are serving in places that have become battlegrounds; the majority remain with their flocks, sharing with them all the horrors of the civil war. Their families suffer from attacks, lack of water and food and shelling. On 31 July Archpriest Vladimir Kreslyansky died of his wounds after the shelling of civilian areas in Lugansk, leaving a wife and five children.

Novorossiya was a fruitful land inhabited by millions of hardworking Orthodox Christians… now, it is being burned down and destroyed. Bombing has destroyed the home of Metropolitan Hilarion (Shukalo) (he heads the Diocese of Donetsk and Mariupol). Artillery shelling damaged the Diocesan Administration building in Gorlovka. The Convent of the Iviron Icon in the Diocese of Donetsk lies in ruins, it was burned down during the fighting. However, the canonical Church is a Martyr Church; it remains with the believers in spite of these difficult conditions, it does everything possible to help people who are experiencing the worst times in modern Ukrainian history. The fire of civil conflict has caused hundreds of thousands to lose their homes and become refugees. Many of them try to escape the horrors of war by finding shelter in churches and monasteries, in particular, in the Monastery of the Dormition in Svyatogorsk, which is full of refugees. In Donetsk, Gorlovka, and Lugansk, civilians try to escape the bombardments by staying in the churches at night; once there, they get free food and shelter. All the canonical Orthodox monasteries, parishes, and dioceses provide all kinds of assistance to refugees and ordinary civilians.

Our Church as a whole is using every opportunity to provide humanitarian assistance to the civilian population in areas where fighting is taking place. Daily, all our churches offer up special prayers for peace and the end of internecine warfare in the Ukraine. The Church is taking care of many thousands of refugees from Novorossiya in camps and in specially prepared facilities located all over Russia. We are providing assistance to all without distinction as to nationality or religion. Amongst those who have sought refuge in Russia are many Ukrainian soldiers who did not want to shoot their own people.

These are perilous days for our Russian Orthodox Church, especially for the faithful in the Ukraine, I ask the prayers of Your Holiness, archpastors, pastors, monastics, and all the believers of the Holy Church of Constantinople for peace in the Ukrainian land, to stop the bloodshed and to end the suffering of our brethren in the Lord, especially of our archpastors and pastors, who in the most difficult conditions of civil strife continue to do their duty courageously, serve the Church and defend Holy Orthodoxy. I ask Your Holiness to use every opportunity to raise your voice to defend Orthodox Christians in Novorossiya, who live in daily fear due to the worsening violence by Greek Catholics and schismatics, who fear that if the persecutors take power they and their loved ones will face severe persecution if they do not renounce their faith.

PATRIARCH KIRILL: WEST SPARES NO EXPENSE TO TURN UKRAINIANS AND RUSSIANS AGAINST EACH OTHER

The West has spared no expense to flood Ukraine with weapons and warfare instructors and to pit Ukrainians and Russians against each other, Patriarch Kirill writes in a letter to a representative of the World Council of Churches, explaining that the war in Ukraine traces to relations between Russia and the West.

On March 2, a week after the fratricidal war in Ukraine began, Fr. Ioan Sauca, a Romanian Orthodox priest, wrote to Patriarch Kirill in his role as Acting General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, calling on him “to mediate so that the war can be stopped and the great suffering ended.”

Fr. Ioan wrote:

It is with great pain and with a breaking heart that I am writing to Your Holiness. The tragic situation of the war in Ukraine has brought tremendous suffering and loss of lives. Many of our brothers and sisters had to leave their homes—including the elderly, women, and children—to save their lives. The whole world is looking with concern and expects to see a sign of hope for a peaceful solution. I receive letters every day from different parts of the world, from church leaders and the faithful of our WCC constituency asking to approach Your Holiness to mediate so that the war can be stopped and the great suffering ended. In these times of hopelessness, many look at you as the one who could bring a sign of hope for a peaceful solution.

I write to Your Holiness as acting general secretary of the WCC but also as an Orthodox priest. Please,raise up your voice and speak on behalf of the suffering brothers and sisters, most of whom are also faithful members of our Orthodox Church.

Western Christians celebrate today Ash Wednesday, the day of repentance as the beginning of Lent; likewise, we, as Orthodox, will celebrate this coming Sunday the “Sunday of Forgiveness” to mark our beginning of Lent next Monday. These powerful moments in our liturgical calendars call us to repentance, peace and reconciliation.

While celebrating these spiritual moments, with filial respect and consideration, I write to Your Holiness to intervene and mediate with the authorities to stop this war, the bloodshed and the suffering, and to make efforts to bring peace through dialogue and negotiations.

In his response to Fr. Ioan yesterday, Pat. Kirill emphasizes that the present confrontation is at its heart not one between Russia and Ukraine, but between Russia and the West, which has worked tirelessly to turn Ukrainians against Russians. Patriarch Bartholomew’s schism in Ukraine had the same goal, the Russian primate writes.

The Patriarch’s letter reads:

… These days, millions of Christians all over the world in their prayers and thoughts turn to the dramatic developments in Ukraine.

As you know, this conflict did not start today. It is my firm belief that its initiators are not the peoples of Russia and Ukraine, who came from one Kievan baptismal font, are united by common faith, common saints and prayers, and share common historical fate.

The origins of the confrontation lie in the relationships between the West and Russia. By the 1990s Russia had been promised that its security and dignity would be respected. However, as time went by, the forces overtly considering Russia to be their enemy came close to its borders. Year after year, month after month, the NATO member states have been building up their military presence, disregarding Russia’s concerns that these weapons may one day be used against it.

Moreover, the political forces which make it their aim to contain Russia were not going to fight against it themselves. They were planning to use other means, having tried to make the brotherly peoples—Russians and Ukrainians—enemies. They spared no effort, no funds to flood Ukraine with weapons and warfare instructors. Yet, the most terrible thing is not the weapons, but the attempt to “re-educate,” to mentally remake Ukrainians and Russians living in Ukraine into enemies of Russia.

Pursuing the same end was the church schism created by Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople in 2018. It has taken its toll on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

As far back as 2014, when blood was being shed in Kiev’s Maidan and there were first victims, the WCC expressed its concern. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, the WCC General Secretary at the time, said on March 3, 2014, “The World Council of Churches is deeply concerned by the current dangerous developments in Ukraine. The situation puts many innocent lives in grave jeopardy. And like a bitter wind from the Cold War, it risks further undermining the international community’s capacity to act now or in the future on the many urgent issues that will require a collective and principled response.”

That was also when an armed conflict broke out in the Donbas region, whose population was defending their right to speak the Russian language, demanding respect for their historical and cultural tradition. However, their voices went unheard, just as thousands of victims among the Donbas population went unnoticed in the Western world.

This tragic conflict has become a part of the large-scale geopolitical strategy aimed, first and foremost, at weakening Russia.

And now the Western leaders are imposing such economic sanctions on Russia that will be harmful to everyone. They make their intentions blatantly obvious—to bring sufferings not only to the Russian political or military leaders, but specifically to the Russian people. Russophobia is spreading across the Western world at an unprecedented pace.

I pray unceasingly that by His power the Lord help establish the lasting and justice-based peace as soon as possible. I ask you and our brothers in Christ, united in the Council, to share this prayer with the Russian Orthodox Church.

Dear Father Ioan, I express my hope that even in these trying times, as has been the case throughout its history, the World Council of Churches will be able to remain a platform for unbiased dialogue, free from political preferences and one-sided approach.

May the Lord preserve and save the peoples of Russia and Ukraine!

POPE AND DECR COMMENT ON PATRIARCH KIRILL-POPE CHAT IN MARCH

Pope Francis and the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations disagree about how to characterize the conversation held between Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis on March 16.

The DECR reported at the time that “the talk included a detailed discussion of the situation on Ukrainian soil. Special attention was paid to the humanitarian aspects of the current crisis and the actions of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church for overcoming its consequences. The parties underscored the utmost importance of the ongoing negotiation process, expressing the hope that a just peace would be achieved as soon as possible.”

According to Vatican News, their talk centered “on the war in Ukraine and on the role of Christians and their pastors in doing everything to ensure that peace prevails.”

“The Pope said, in agreement with the Patriarch, that ‘The Church must not use the language of politics, but the language of Jesus,’” the official Catholic outlet noted. Both sides also agreed that “the Churches are called to contribute to strengthening peace and justice.”

In an interview with the Italian outlet Corriere Della Sera yesterday, the Pope recalled the conversation, with a different emphasis than the Vatican reports:

I spoke to Kirill for 40 minutes via zoom. For the first 20 he had a card in hand, reading me all the justifications for the war. I listened and told him: I don’t understand anything about this. Brother, we are not clerics of the state; we can’t use the language of politics, but that of Jesus. We’re shepherds of the same holy people of God. For this we must seek ways of peace, to put an end to the firing of weapons. The Patriarch can’t transform himself into Putin’s altar boy.

The DECR issued a response to the Pope’s remarks today, stating: “It’s regrettable that a month and a half after the conversation with Patriarch Kirill, Pope Francis chose the wrong tone to convey the content of this conversation. Such utterances can hardly further constructive dialogue between the Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox Churches, which is so necessary at the current time.”

The statement then quotes Pat. Kirill from the March conversation with the Pope:

I thank you for the opportunity to hold this meeting. When we met in 2016 in Cuba, I said to you that we were meeting at the right time and in the right place. And although our communication is being held through the use of long-distance technology, I still believe that we are once more talking to each other at the right time. With your permission, I would like to share with you my perception of the present-day difficult situation. Of course, we live in different informational spaces: the Western media has either remained silent or said practically very little on those facts which I would like to draw your attention to.

The Russian primate emphasized that the conflict began with the Maidan events in Kiev in 2014, and drew special attention to the tragedy in Odessa in May 2014, when Nazi groups burned Russian-speakers alive in the Trade Union House.

The Patriarch also told Pope Francis about how NATO promises not to expand eastward after the fall of the Soviet Union were broken.

“An extremely dangerous situation had risen as a result in that the borders of NATO were now within 130 kilometers of St. Petersburg and the time it takes for a rocket to reach the city is a few minutes. Had NATO received Ukraine into its membership, then the time it would take for a rocket to reach Moscow would also be a few minutes. Russia could not and cannot permit this,” the DECR statement reads, summarizing the words of Pat. Kirill.

The DECR also quotes the Patriarch’s concluding remarks about the pain of his flock suffering on both sides:

Of course, the present situation causes me great pain. My flock is on both sides of the conflict and most of them are Orthodox people. Part of the opposing side is from your flock. I would like therefore, leaving the geopolitical aspect to one side, to pose the question of how we and our Churches can influence the situation? How can we act together to bring peace to the hostile parties with the single aim of establishing peace and justice? It is very important in these conditions to avoid further escalation.

Patriarch Kirill comes from a family and Church that is well acquainted with suffering for its faith, and so he can’t be intimidated by the threat of sanctions, says Russian Church representative Vladimir Legoida.

The head of the Synodal Department for Relations Between the Church and Society and the Media earlier commented on the Lithuanian proposal to the EU to sanction the Patriarch.

And in light of reports that such a decision has reportedly already been made and will soon be announced, Legoida commented again:

My opinion remains unchanged: The more indiscriminate the sanctions become, the more they lose touch with common sense, the more distant the achievement of peace becomes, for which the Russian Orthodox Church prays with the blessing of His Holiness the Patriarch at every Liturgy. My words are confirmed by the assistance to all victims of the Ukrainian conflict.

I would also remind the authors of the sanction initiatives that Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia comes from a family whose members were subjected to repression for decades for their faith and moral position during the times of militant communist atheism. And none of them were afraid of imprisonment or even reprisals, so you have to be completely unfamiliar with the history of our Church in order to try to intimidate its clergy and faithful by entering them into some lists.

As OrthoChristian reported earlier this week, a bill has been submitted to the Ukrainian Parliament calling for sanctions against the Patriarch, as well as Metropolitans Hilarion (Alfeyev) and Tikhon (Shevkunov) and Archpriest Nikolai Balashov.

We offer unto Thee, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching Thy clemency, that it may ascend before Thy divine Majesty, as a sweet savor, for our salvation, and for that of the whole world. Amen.
