Then the priest takes the chalice, and offers it, saying:We offer unto Thee, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching Thy clemency, that it may ascend before Thy divine Majesty, as a sweet savor, for our salvation, and for that of the whole world. VII, reivindicando el espíritu de tolerancia y la conllevancia de
moros judíos y cristianos hizo llamarse rey de las tres culturas.
Era una utopía pero las utopías cupieron siempre en España. Es
solaz volver a las consejas de don Juan Manuel tremendo escritor,
señor de Peñafiel, cerca de donde yo pasé mi infancia, y que
practicaba el arte de la caza mayor en el que era ducho por aquellos
tesos y povedas del Duratón y las cuarenta villas que fueron
repobladas con moros traídos desde Andalucía después de la batalla
de Jaén. Dos siglos después del emperador cuando el infante don
juan Manuel señor de Peñafiel y de Escalona cuando éste redacta
sus libros de cetrería aún pervivía. La mayor parte de los obreros
que trabajaron en las iglesias románicas muy abundantes en la zona
al sur del padre Duero eran alarifes musulmanes. A cuya causa se
atribuye en que los capiteles y columnas de estos edificios no se
tallara la figura humana. El Corán las prohibía y sí en cambio

dinásticas se refugió en la literatura y la filosofía el señor de
Peñafiel. Hay consejos para la madre recién parida que lloraba. Por
que lloras, mujer. Porque mi niño no mama. O cuenta lo que le pasó
al diablo con una monja o falsa beguina1
para fustigar la hipocresía de las que llamaban en el medioevo gatas
religiosas.
O al moro que fue rey de Córdoba. En esta historieta despliega sus
conocimientos del árabe pero siempre defiende la ortodoxia católica
y la preeminencia que ha de tener la cruz sobre la media luna.
Aconseja a los mahometanos que se bauticen. Ya entonces el Islam se
mostraba irreducible porque son
muy sañados… y los moros han por costumbre adobar la cena a los
novios.
Algunas historias nos revierten al Boccaccio emanantes de la
literatura oral como el mancebo
que casó con muyer brava
que debía de ser asturiano. No se cansa de advertir a sus lectores
que Dios es derechero que hagan el bien y desdeñen a los malos
porque a la muerte ha de darse cuentas al Altísimo y para ello toma
parábolas procedentes de los catálogos de cetrería. Conocía bien
a los sagres y a los halcones marceros que domesticaba en los patios
de armas de sus castillos amaestrandolos con el capillo y la pihuela.
De lo que aconteció al rey de Sevilla abenaquid con su esposa

MIÑO AL BIDASOA
El
Café Gijón encandilaba un poco a los que teníamos querencia del
norte. En la infancia leímos a Palacio Valdés y los cuentos de
Clarín. No Clarín no era un autor prohibido. Su “Adiós
Cordera”
venía en todas las antologías de la época y fue el ejercicio de
texto con el que nos examinaron de revalida. Ciertamente la “Regenta”
había sido proscrita por el a la sazón falangista Antonio Tovar
quien acabaría renegando de los principios fundamentales del
Movimiento y escribiendo en el “País” junto con Aranguren, Laín
y otros del grupo duro de Salamanca que dieron un giro de cien
grados. No removamos el agua pasada. Lo cierto es que en los 60 la
“Regenta” se puso de moda y Oviedo, la catedral de Oviedo,
Vetusta, se convirtieron en el “locus amoenus” de aquellos que se
iniciaron en literatura. El Gijón y Casa Mingo eran los puntos de
referencia de aquella Asturias que era como la aldea soñada. El bar
de Recoletos con sus ventanales, los espejos y el aire camp y el de
Paseo de la Florida porque era un chigre como los que unos se puede
encontrar en Ribadesella, sus pipas o cubas arriba y la galería de
grandes botellas, el tillado de madera cubierto de aserrín y abajo
el mostrador las cubetas de roble para escanciar la sidra que vertía
la botella sobre el vaso con gesto de impasse del venanciador. A
ambos lugares los considerábamos como una querencia de los montes y
los prados y esa atracción de la sidra escanciada. Por tales lugares
emblemáticos del Madrid de los 60 Asturias nos llamaba. En Mingo se
servía el mejor pollo asado de Madrid y la sidra no era mala aunque
el corcho perdía una parte de su vigor al tramontar el puerto de
Pajares. Desde allí se escuchaba el pitido de los trenes que iban
para el norte aquellos correos que tomábamos para ir a los
seminarios. El que pasó la marola pasó la mar toda, dicen en
Galicia y aquel septentrión nos convocaba. Lo supe cuando el padre
Heras me sacó medio ahogado de la playa de Oyambre. Que mi vida iba
a transcurrir a la orilla del Cantábrico. Allí estaban mis raíces.
Vuelve a casa pan perdido. Como periodista me formé en la escuela de
la Nueva España de Oviedo, un grupo que tenía a los Cereceda y
sobre todo a Juan Ramón Pérez de las Clotas por epígonos. Casa
Mingo. El Gijón. Cela. Las dos Asturias la de Santillana del Mar y
la de Pravia. Cela. Tierra de meigas. De romerías y canciones y de
libros, muchos libros. El genio nómada y don Camilo se revela en
“Del
Miño al Bidasoa”.
Es la otra cara de la moneda. Si en Viaje a la Alcarria nos pone
delante a la Castilla venerable y seca en esta otra nos adentra en el
mundo misterioso de los nuberos,
los bosques, las xanas, las meigas. Es su libro más poético y donde
se plasma esa tendencia vagabunda y peripatético del escritor que
caminando estudia el paisaje, reseña al paisanaje, cuenta la
historia de un país y se deja llevar por una vena misericordiosa y
poética a los desheredados. La ruta se inicia en Santiago de
Compostela y acaba en Vera de Bidasoa. El autor hace el camino en
compañía de un vendedor de molinillos de papel. Se nos muestra un
gallego total que ama tanto a su patria que prefiere dirigirse en
romance a cualquier paisano que topa por esos mundos de dios:
afiladores, segadores, lampistas y gallegos que se buscan la vida
fuera del país. Don Camilo debe de revolverse en su tumba cuando
escucha falar
a los políticos y a las políticas de la autonomía y a los
radiofonistas de Radio Ribadeo cuya jerga nadie tiene que ver con el
gallego meloso de cantiga aprendido cerca de Puente Deume que le
enseñó su padre. pues eso ni es gallego ni es nada. En mi
entrevista de Londres me dijo que una lengua no se puede imponer
mediante decretos del BOE y eso puede que es lo que esté ocurriendo
en la actualidad. Imponer el gallego, el catalán o el vasco por las
bravas. Dejen al pueblo que se exprese en el idioma que le dé la
gana aunque tal vez haya que suponer que estas draconianas campañas
desde arriba obedezcan a un plan maquiavélico para la desmembración
de España a cargo de aquellos que tanto lo odiaron. Cela, ya digo
muestra cierta prevención hacia los coritos y nunca pudo disimular
su desagrado hacia ciertos ambientes ovetenses. Debió de ser un
viejo resabio o resentimiento por aquel tiro que le pegaron cerca en
la Manjoya o por el lío de lo de la Virgen de Covadonga. Baya usted
a saber. En el Miño al Bidasoa por Oviedo pasa de largo. Después de
hacer un canto a su Galicia enxeibre
se mete hacia Luarca por Castropol, encuentra las carreteras llenas
de polvo, se interna por Salas donde le debió de ocurrir un episodio
alcohólico en compañía de su personaje de gloriosa ficción.
Dupont, vendedor de molinillos de papel, hace autostop en una
camioneta y despierta en Ribadesella. Su peregrinación antes de la
motorización de España alberga el interés de la descripción de
una Asturias donde había empezado la emigración y los pueblos se
quedaban vacíos. La prosa es rica, lozana y cuajada de esa
socarronería llena de donaire aunque tendente al esperpento
típicamente celiano. Este libro que leí yo hace muchos años en esa
gran tasca de san Antonio de la Florida y por leerlo dejé de ir a la
verbena madrileña tan famosa y la primera que Dios envía me evocaba
el sonido de la gaita, miraba para el techo y allí veía como
enormes gigantes a los grandes toneles de sidrina como odres de la
venta de Don Quijote (cuanta risa, que de folixia, cuantas canciones
deberían ocultar aquellas pipas en sus panzas) me mostró los
caminos del norte. Marcaba un rumbo. Flecha hacia el norte y en el
norte viví mis mejores años gracias a Dios, Una tarde de junio se
me aparecieron la Regenta y doña Berta y estaba caminando por el
paseo de este lugar de Madrid la Dama del Alba que iba a la verbena
disfrazada de peregrina. No fue una visión, una epifanía.
Barruntaba que mis pasos se dirigían hacia las montañas de Ancares,
los gollizos de la sierra de Baños de Luna, las revueltas de
Pajares. Venga, que nos vamos para las rías Bajas y riberas Bidasoa
donde el hablar es más suave y corito que en los penetrales de la
España interior, antes, claro está, de que estallase el goma dos
del separatismo rompedor o la bomba de mis inseguridades que harían
explosión entre mis dedos dejándome manco, aturdido y sin rumbo. No
le gustaban a don Camilo los gallegos chambones, abjuraba de los
asturianos carbayones de digotelo

DE MAGDALA Y EL DIABLO
Suelo
celebrar con gran regocijo esta fiesta de la Magdalena. Cuando viví
en Inglaterra impartí un curso de poesía castellana en el Magdelene
College. Hermosas vivencias paseos junto al río los cisnes sobre la
superficie y en el espejo de las aguas se reflejaba creí entender la
rubia cabellera de la que fue gran peccatrix (pecadora).
Pero amó mucho más que pecó y todo se la perdonó. De ella dice el
evangelio que Jesús expulsó de su cuerpo hasta cinco diablos, dulce
Jesús exorcista mucho más contundente que el padre Fortea. Este
supuesto acendra su talla gigantesca porque ESTA HERMOSA SANTA a la
que los imageneros medievales pintan siempre de rubia representa
la victoria del bien sobre el demonio, y uno de los más
refractarios, según saben los teólogos, creo que es el de la
fornicación porque es el envés del poder, el afán de riqueza y de
posesión.
La
lujuria embota las lamas y suele ser compañera de la ira, la

hoguera del amor, aquel fuego de amor divino en el cual se abrasaron
Magdalena y algunos santos. Papini, uno de los autores más
entendidos en satanismo, glosando a León Blois, dice que el Gran
Separador es el que impera en la edad moderna Escuchemos un convierto
de rock, contemplemos el Guernica, leamos las novelas del tonto de
Pérez Reverte, veamos los seriales y sitcoms mada in Hollywood,
echemos un vistazo a las primeras páginas de los periodicos. El New
Yok Times se
encuentra entre los más diabólicos. El Principe
de la Mentira tiene
muchos secuaces en el mundo hoy.. Parece muy congruente esta visión.
En
España la política, amen de un esperpento, es un perpetuo desasosiego, una irreverencia, un insulto a la lógica. Los comisarios
de Belcebú cuidan bien la parva ,no se les desmonte el almiar o se
revuelvan los haces.
Antes
se solía decir no está el verde para pitos ni el Alcocer para
zampoñas ni tampoco el manto de Magdalena para tafetanes. Sin
embargo todos los 22 de julio es una fiesta importante para mí que
celebra como el triunfo del amor sobre el odio, la envidia, la
mentira, la coz que siempre nos encuentra desprevenido, el letargo
de la estupidez humana que no cesa, el culto a todo lo que es
feo y estridente, y el marasmo de horizontes sin
esperanzas en que vivimos. Esta mujer que fue puta le hizo un corte
de manga al diablo. Fue una de las más hermosas hembras de la
antiguedad.
El
ósculo a los pies de Dios la llenó de fortaleza, e incentivo su
belleza, sobre todo su belleza interior. Magdalena muestra el camino
de la victoria que no es otro que la renuncia a sí misma, la
penitencia constante, el ayuno, morir a los sentidos, indiferencia
ante todo lo que nos pasa. Su festividad fue muy importante sobre
todo durante la edad media. A raíz de la peste negra y de la sífilis
de la debacle sexual que asuela a los siglos medios cuando se
emancipa la gleba y empiezan las peregrinaciones, en los
hospitales y lazaretos del viejo camino jacobeo no faltaba nunca una
