MARY OF MAGDALENE AND THE DEVIL
I usually celebrate this feast of Mary Magdalene with great joy. When I lived in England, I taught Spanish poetry at Magdalene College. It was a wonderful experience: boats on the River Ouse, swans on the surface, reflections in the mirror of the waters – and I seemed to understand the movement of the great sinner’s fair hair when she uttered a cry of love.
“Rabboni… my lord.”
Because she loved much, more than she sinned, she was forgiven everything.
The Gospel says that Jesus cast out five devils from her body. Sweet Jesus, exorcist, much more powerful than Father Fortea.
This suggestion reinforces her gigantic status among the saints, since she symbolizes the victory of good over the devil, and one of the most rebellious, as far as theologians know, I believe, is fornication.
Lust dulls the soul, turns fornicators into beasts, and often accompanies anger, pride, and gluttony. She who was ignored by the Pharisee Lazarus was the one who threw herself at the feet of Jesus.
She anointed them with nard oil before their burial and wiped their feet with her hair.
This sinner, this old harlot, would become one of the most important figures in His public life. She was one of the holy women who appeared at the foot of the cross, and the one who revealed His resurrection.
The Savior was not a woman-hater, despite the accusation that he walked among publicans and sinners who ate and drank, and after Him there was no lack of harlots - a humble craft, the oldest in the world.
The presence of the Savior redeemed them, and they became chaste and pure again.
The demons that the Lord cast out of Mary Magdalene's body are almost a historical explanation for Eve's plot with the serpent.
Through them both evil and good come into the world, and it is important to remember the important thing: the master of the world, the lord of history, is Satan.
According to Latin theology, the devil is the one who rules, and his presence has become increasingly active in recent times, as we approach the Parousia.
He rules over all political and media plans and continues his work of cooling and pouring ice water on the fire of love, that fire of divine love in which Mary Magdalene and some saints were burned.
Papini, one of the most knowledgeable authors on Satanism, embellishing Leon Bloy, says that the Great Separator reigns in the modern era.
This vision seems quite consistent.
In Spain, politics is a constant restlessness, irreverence, an insult to logic.
Beelzebub's commissars carefully guard the threshing floor, not allowing it to be dismantled.
They used to say that green is not for whistles, an alcoker is not for a pipe, and Magdalene's mantle is not for taffeta.
However, every July 22 is an important holiday for me, and I celebrate it as a triumph of love over hatred, envy, lies, the kick that always takes us by surprise, the lethargy of stupidity and the stagnation or hopelessness in which we live.
This woman, who was a harlot, showed the devil the middle finger. A kiss at the feet of God filled her with strength.
Mary Magdalene shows the way to victory, which is nothing other than self-denial, constant repentance, fasting, death of feelings and indifference to everything that happens to us.
Her holiday was very important, especially in the Middle Ages.
After the Black Death and syphilis epidemics, the image of the saint was always found in hospitals and infirmaries along the ancient Way of St. James.
The liturgy dedicates beautiful Latin hymns to her, and her name occupies a central place in the main litanies.
