Papal hypocrisy: Francis promotes a decree that punishes illegal entries into the Vatican with up to four years in prison

The decree provides, among other measures, for prison sentences of one to four years and fines of up to 25,000 euros for those who enter Vatican territory with violence, threats or deception. The latter includes actions such as fraudulent circumvention of security systems or evasion of border controls.

Aggravating circumstances and related crimes

The penalties will be more severe if the illegal entry is carried out using weapons, dangerous substances or in groups.

In addition, they are increased by up to two thirds if a border control is forced by driving a vehicle. On the other hand, the decree introduces new provisions regulating unauthorized overflight of Vatican airspace, including the use of drones, with sentences of up to three years in prison.

Prohibitions of access and administrative measures

Among the new provisions, the possibility of imposing a ban on access to Vatican territory for a period of up to 15 years for those who repeat illegal entry, as well as establishing administrative fines for those who do not respect the rules of residence or use of properties granted in the State, stands out.

Objective: safeguarding the security of the Vatican

The decree responds to the urgent need to guarantee security in a territory of high religious and diplomatic importance. In this sense, the new provisions reinforce the legal tools available to prevent and sanction acts that may put public order or the integrity of Vatican facilities at risk.
