BECQUER VIAJA A VERUELA Posted: 02 Apr 2017 11:36 AM PDT Bécquer en el monasterio de Veruela Un día de la primavera de 1863 tomé en la estación de Delicias el tren de Ariza. Aragón era un vergel. El ruiseñor  cantor anidaba entre las ramas de los piescales a los que la primavera había vestido con la purpura cardenalicia. Nuestro vagón iba atestado de baturros calzón de media anqueta el cachirulo de yerbas en la frente. Y de peregrinos madrileños que iban al Pilar por promesa. Sonaban aires de jota en el siguiente vagón del convoy donde una batería de artilleros marchaba camino del frente del MAESTRAZGO. Iba a luchar contra los facciosos de Zumalacárregui y sus bandas carlistas. En nuestro compartimento un cura rezaba el breviario o hacía        que farfullaba preces en latín, terciado el balandrán, los ojos puestos sobre una moza que acababa de entrar en el compartimento llevando una inmensa cesta de huevos a la cadera.  La teja del cura o gorro eclesiástico ocupaba buena parte del testel de equipaje.  Descendió al anden en Agreda donde  era esperado por el sacristán de su parroquia, y una oronda maña con el garbo de la tierra en los andares de las hembras aragonesas y una monaguillo que era tan parecido a él que los ingleses dirían que era su spitting image. seguro que aquel cura era su padre, Un joven sevillano estaba en frente de mí; ojos ardientes melena y perilla se sentaba en el rincón de la ventanilla no podían ser sus ojos más soñadores. Era Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer. No habló en todo el trayecto, miraba el paisaje. De vez en cuando sacaba un prontuario que escondía entre su manta de viaje y apuntaba alguna palabra o una frase feliz alguna ocurrencia de sus compañeros de ruta. No pude distinguir el tenor de aquellas notas pero observé que pintaba en su cuaderno de campo el rostro del cura, la cabeza romana del labrador del cachirulo y fuertes pantorrillas o la figura esbelta de la joven que nos dijo ser esposa de un militar de Zaragoza. Cuando le ofrecieron beber vino de la tierra lo desdeñó con mucha elegancia. Luego supimos que aquel joven de aspecto tan señorial y elegante marchaba a un balneario de Borja a tomar las aguas termales. Luego cayó en lánguido mutismo soportando las cuchufletas de los acompañantes las torvas miradas del cura y las agresividades de un seminarista de Zaragoza que plantaba su pierna indecorosamente al lado de la lady pues la mujer del militar era inglesa. Tampoco se quejó de los baches y las  incomodidades de la tartana por camino de herradura, que hubimos de tomar en Tudela. Veinte leguas en carne mortal hasta Cariñena pero al fin llegamos con el cuerpo dolorido a causa del traqueteo, los reniegos y blasfemias del delantero y hartos del cante y del vino áspero de Cariñena que dicen que es garantía de salud y resucita a los muertos. El poeta tosía con frecuencia. Acaso era este el motivo de su tristeza el de su precaria salud. Posamos en una fonda de la capital del Somontano y al día siguiente, de amanecida, enganchamos la riata de la posta (seis pares de mulas, un arriero que ya de madrugada se había tomado sus traguillos de aguardiente) y recorrimos las siete leguas que separan dicha población de Veruela. El lugar es un recóndito paraíso escondido en un fértil valle entre montañas donde se alza uno de los primeros conventos cistercienses edificado en el siglo XII por el conde don PEDRO ATARES y dedicado a la Virgen María  ESPAÑA MI NATURA
